Neo Geo MVS

Post by Frizz.Meister »

Id never heard of this console untill recently and after a little research i realised i want one and could most likely afford it. However, What is it? I know it sounds dumb but every one ive found for sale is just a motherboard. Is it that there is an arcade cab version and a home version? Or have i got the wrong end of the stick?

There are two versions of the Neo-Geo. First, was the arcade cabinet, the MVS (Multi Video System) It came in many versions, each with different numbers of "slots", or cartridges it can hold . It came in 1,2,4 and 6 slots. It has two sets of controls for co-op/head-to-head play.
The AES (advance Entertainment System) Was the home system, that came around after the sucsess of the arcade MVS. It cost alot, because it was basicaly the arcade hardware (The cartridges can even be converted to work together) Due to the high price, not that many were sold, making them abut of a rarity.
I own an MVS cab, and I love it!

www.neo-geo.com is a great source where I learned everything about the Neo Geo.

I'm personally going to get a Mega Neo Geo AES from neostore (it's modified with s-video/composite, LED and the debug bios chip(cheat device like action replay)) and then get the Super MVS Convertor II which will let you play MVS games on an AES system.

it'll run about 750 for everything though, you probably can get a MVS arcade cabinent for that much, so it's up to you.

Neo-geo.com is the best resource as they said. You can consolize an MVS board. I just finished wiring mine up last night and tested it out successfully. They aren't too bad to consolize if you can read wiring diagrams and solder. I got an MV-1 board, JAMMA harness (so you don't have to solder to points on the board itself), Neobitz video encoder (to take the RGB signal and convert to s-video) and used an old ATX power supply I had laying around. Total cost less than $150. Now, I still need to adapt some controllers to plug into the on board controller ports and build a plexiglass casing but the cost really isn't that bad. Might even add a Unibios. My board has a socket one so it just pops out. No soldering involved. Sure, after I build the enclosure and make controllers I will have invested as much as just buying an AES off of E-Bay or a forum, but MVS games are typically a lot less than their AES counterparts.

If you get a Neo Geo

Buy a cabinet or a supergun

Consolizing is wack. With a cabinet or supergun you can play all kinds of different Arcade games.

neo geo...whack.....

Neo geo AES is great, good titles will run you EASY 200+ unless you want to spend 500$ for metalslugs, get the convertor. Which is about 250 alone, but worth it.

Neo Geo CD cool for what it is, games are decently priced, but the loading time is like being hit by a mack truck and living, BUT having to go thru years of surgery.

Console mvs, in my opinion, is the best way to go. Loading times are...nothing. Also mvs games are ALOT cheaper, say the AES version of a game is...500$ normally the mvs cart can be found for 100-175 depending on values and who has it for sale. Also if it comes with the matching shock box with matching serials.

Superguns are neat....if you make it yourself or have one custom made. Anything main stream or the ones you see on ebay are 9 out of 10 crap. I was going to get a custom one made by a VERY high outstanding quality member at neogeo, hey he also makes console mvs systems.

I have had a cmvs and I loved it, as well as an aes, if your collecting and have money go aes AND get the nice add on mvs adapter.

If you just want to play all the neogeo games and be able to still afford to have a life, get a console mvs. You can also take it to friends and play

If you want something that takes up the back of your car, get an ebay supergun, or spend a chunk more and have a REALLY nice custom one made. THEN you would have to buy a neo geo mvs board, THEN games.

Just my 2 cents.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

Two things to note...

For the MVS, a consolized system is great, like some of the guys above said, you can do one for like $150 when you get done with parts & getting the board. You can also use a MVS motherboard without consolizing it using a supergun (basically, it's a tinier version of everything that the board would connect to in an arcade cabinet, so you can use it on your TV). The supergun route is great only if you think you'll start getting into JAMMA/CPS2/OTher arcade hardware. Honestly, as a guy who went from just wanting one cabinet to owning 3 and a bunch of arcade games, once you start, you can't stop... in a good way. :P So a supergun may not be a bad move, BUT you will still need to get a Neo Geo mobo.

You CAN go the AES route, but honestly, don't do it. It's VERY pricey, the system itself cost more than building a consolized system yourself in some cases, and to get MVS games to play on it you need an adapter that cost $150-200 on it's own. On top of that, all of the better/rarer/more desired games for AES are pricier than their MVS counterpart by a wide margin in some cases. It'll add up very quickly going that route and given you can get a Neo Geo arcade cabinet for $300-500 (depending on quality and included games), IMO it's not worth it.

Good luck on w/e you decide man!
