Questions About NES Powerpack

Post by lisalover1 »

I'm seriously considering getting an NES Powerpack, but I have a few questions, first.

1. Can the cart play Famicom games on an NTSC-U NES?
2. Will the cart work on clone systems like the Yobo FC? I know it says it doesn't work on the main page, but I have heard by some that it does, so I don't know.
3. Is there a compatibility list for games available?

I have two of them and they are great. Don't hesitate to buy one. Here is the list of consoles it works on and most importantly what it does not work on:

System Compatibility List:
Works on authentic Nintendo Systems including NTSC, PAL A, PAL B, and Asian top loader and toaster systems.
Works on Famicom using 72-60 pin converter.
Does NOT work on clone systems like the NEX, Yobo, or FC Twin.
Untested on portable systems, not likely to work.

Q: Can the cart play Famicom games on an NTSC-U NES?

A: Yes. The NES game play real Famicom cartridges as well with a pin adapter. Famicom games are NTSC-J, which is 60Hz and really no different from the NES NTSC-U. The Powerpak has no problem playing any Famicom game as long as it doesn't use a pirate mapper or MMC5.

The Powerpak can even run PAL games on a north american NES, but since the PAL NES games were designed with the 2A07 processor that's 12% slower than the US one, PAL NES games run on the powerpak 12% faster than they should be.

Q: Will the cart work on clone systems like the Yobo FC? I know it says it doesn't work on the main page, but I have heard by some that it does, so I don't know.

A: No, the Powerpak will not work on any clone systems based on Nintendo-on-a-chip archetypes. The Yobo FC, Generation NEX, RetroDuo or whatever else is currently being made will NOT even boot the Powerpak.

The only clones you'll get the Powerpak to run on are direct hardware clones, those being clones made before 1991 or so that copy the hardware of the Famicom directly so there's a cloned CPU, PPU, and the rest of the board. Due to the difficulty of finding one of these clones, you're much better off getting a real NES, or better yet, an AV Famicom. With an NES adapter, the Powerpak has no problem running on a Japanese AV Famicom.

Q:Is there a compatibility list for games available?

A: Not really. The Powerpak now plays almost everything, including a number of Japanese-only mappers. The only ones that come to mind that are not yet supported are the extremely complex ones that took PC emulators years and years to be able to effectively emulate.

The ones I can think of are Nintendo's MMC5 (Castlevania 3, Uncharted Waters, Just Breed, Metal Slander Glory, etc) and Konami's VRC7 used in Lagrange Point, an RPG with the most advanced sound chip ever produced for the Famicom, offering Sega Genesis quality audio. The only English language loss for these mappers is Castlevania 3, but the Powerpak can run the VRC6 which was used fro the Japanese version, Akumajou Densetsu, which features more advanced audio than MMC5 could allow.

I'd be happy to help with any other questions you might have.

It does not work on my Retro Duo (tho the SNES one works perfectly).

The only games I tried that didn't work on it were most pirate and multi-game pirate roms (I was kinda hoping the Contra 100-in-1 would work). The mapper hack roms also behaved strangely. FWIW it has better compatibility than most emulators.
