Blown jp dreamcast fix required.

Post by Demented Collector »

Hello everyone.

Stupidly i plugged my jp DC into the 240 volt power supply. :(

This caused quite a lot of smoke  and looking at the power board it has liquid on it.

I found on google that you can swap the power board for a pal one, which i did.

The DC now powers up and the disc spins but it is unable to read discs.

Any suggestions on what could be the problem?

I have plenty of spare pal parts to swap if needed but no jp spares.

Thanks in advance. :)

I don't think you realize, but your thread title is offensive.
But no worries easy for you to edit a fix.

But in answer to your query probably have to get another JAPANESE model.
I think more cooked inside besides just the power transformer.

Only thing I can think of is that it fried your laser too? I'd try adjusting your laser pot very slightly... youtube most likely has videos if you need help. I assume you know what I'm talking about though seeing you swapped boards no problem.

Welcome to the forum! I can't really help you with the problem, but just so you understand what CRTGAMER meant, on this forum we us JP or JPN to abbreviate "Japanese." It's just to avoid confusion with a certain racial slur and make sure nobody gets offended. Not trying to attack you, just FYI.

I hope someone can help you! Hope to see you around!

What did he say that was so offensive? "jap"?

This is the internet, people need to stop being so PC.

My sincere apologies if i have offended anyone with my oversight, now edited.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

So i tried recalibrating the laser which didn't work.

Next i swapped the laser and the circuit board it sits on for a PAL one, that didn't work either so i'm all out of ideas.

Thank people for your help, it's much appreciated.

I like forums that have rules and don't end up with people throwing insults at each other.

Perhaps the smoke got the laser assembly and lens just dirty enough to not cooperate. Dampen a qtip with alcohol, make sure it isn't dripping, then lightly drag it across the lens a few times. Give it time to dry, then try again. If it still isn't working, maybe a reflective mirror or something in side the laser assembly that's still dirty. I've seen videos for cleaning this on a PS2, but not specifically looked for ones for a DC.

Panic over. :D

I am a total fool.

The console wasn't an NTSC/J one, it's an NTSC/U one, no wonder it couldn't read JPN discs.

It is now happily purring away with the new PAL power board in it and i dont have to worry about frying it.

That's what you get for having 30 odd DCs lying around.

Time to get the sticky labels out i think.

Thank everyone for your advice. 8)
