Timesplitters: Future Perfect is Overrated!

Post by Weekend_Warrior »

I finally played the PS2 version and here's what I think.

First off, I think the audio in this game is about the worst I've ever heard in an FPS.
- the sound effects in general are extremely low in volume. Sounds actually muffled to me
- the sound effects that are used are very weak-sounding and lack any dynamic punch
- there's a lot of missing sfx. Most notably the fact that there's no walking sounds! WTF
- when someone speaks, no matter where they are, they are very loud and "in-your-face"

The AI is also pretty weak. You can shoot at someone from a distance and they'll turn around in the opposite direction and shoot at the wall! Huh?

The PS2 version also suffers from a similar fate as other FPS's on its console - frequent drops in framerate that bogs (or slows) the game down. Especially during heavy gunfire.

Finally, no matter what gun you use... unless you shoot them in the head you'll have to blast them at least 3 times to kill them.

I may try the Xbox version sometime just to see if the framerate and sound are any better. But overall, I'm very disappointed. This game has gotten many positive reviews from gamers and critics alike and I honestly can't understand why... I think it pretty much sucks!? And I think Half-Life and Red Faction (despite their own technical issues) piss all over this game!

Am I missing something? If anything, how is this game better than a 5 out of 10 at best?

I loved Timesplitters 2. Future Perfect has been too expensive for my liking.
But yeah, it's all about the multiplayer and the bonus games.
The AI in single-player isn't that great in there either...

Running through the mission in co-op is pretty awesome. It was actually also the first console FPS that I've played online, with full voice chat and all. It was pretty impressive for its day. It's basically why people love CounterStrike, it's just damn fun to play. Honestly I wouldn't put it in and play it today as it has been trumped in almost every way by modern shooters. The console FPS in specific hasn't aged well as a genre. I mean Goldeneye 007 is still fun for a laugh every now and then but not something I would devote any serious time to anymore.

My two cents.

I always played it on the Gamecube, and I can't find anything I dislike about it.

The Timesplitters series overall is pretty overrated, it is just another mediocre FPS in an ever expanding sea of mediocre FPS's.

For me it was the multiplayer and large cast of characters.

Never played Future perfect but I am after it for my cube collection, Timesplitters is like the Goldeneye and Perfect dark of the last gen though so I can see why people go on about multiplayer.
