Farewell, Atlus.

Post by lisalover1 »

I never really thought this day would come, but it has. Atlus Incorporated, the developer of such beloved franchises as Shin Megami Tensei, has been dissolved by its parent company, Index Group. As of Monday, September 30th, Atlus no longer exists. As you could imagine, this is terrible news for fans of the company's games. However, there is a bit of good news. New titles released by Index will still bear the Atlus logo, and as of now, no major changes seem to be being made to Atlus' planned releases. I just hope that we don't have another Sammy->Sega or Aruze->SNK scenario on our hands.

First off, this is Atlus the Japanese developer who created SMT, Trauma Center, and Etrian Odyssey. This has nothing to do with Atlus USA, the localization company.

Secondly, this is a reincorporation of the Atlus resources into the parent company. This isn't "We're getting rid of Atlus and firing everyone". So until we here otherwise this should basically be business as usual with regards to Atlus-created games.

This basically gives the parent company easier access to the Atlus IP for their own projects, such as mobile phone games. When they were a full independent (though wholy owned) company that gets messier to do from a legal perspective.

According to a press statement, the Atlus brand will continue to exist regardless of the state of Atlus the corporate entity, and Katsura Hashino, director of Atlus' recently-announced Catherine, posted a message that indicated his team was unaffected by the change.

Doesn't sound like as big of a deal as one might think

Hopefully it won't be much different, and it sounds like that's the case from the later posts. I love Atlus, as they are indirectly responsible for me getting back into retro gaming. I watched a review of "The Dark Spire" for the DS on youtube by the Classic Game Room, and realized that if I want to play more awesome RPGs like that I would need to go back to the older game systems. Picked up a Retro Duo (since replaced by original hardware), a handful of NES/SNES RPGs and I was well on my way back to the classics.

Very much looking forward to Etrian Odyssey 3 from them.
