It's just been confirmed that renowned anime director Satoshi Kon has died at the age of 47. His creative input into a rather stale format will be sorely missed. RIP.

In a market flooded with fan-boy pandering borderline pedo crap, he was a beacon.

He will be sorely missed.

Wow, that was sudden. Terrible news, nonetheless.

Wow, this is incredibly bad news. Satoshi Kon was a powerhouse in the world of animation. This is indeed tragic. I hope The Dream Machine will still see a release.

This blew my mind when I heard it. Marathoning the movies later this week for certain though.

EDIT: I wouldn't say psychological anime is dead though. Yuasa of Mind Game and Kaiba fame is still going strong.

Well that stinks. He was the only anime director whose work I would pay attention to purely based off his name.

This is really upsetting. At 47 during production of another film too. I can't think of very many directors or animations that could provide a mature narrative of such quality that consistently. I don't think there is anything he touched I disliked and I've always referenced his stuff to people. It's what got a lot of people I know into watching anime. There are a lot of negative preconceptions about the medium to people who don't know about the quality that does occasionally come out of it.

Edit: It appears he died from pancreatic cancer
