Beatemups 101

Post by noiseredux »

Great job, gamerforlife! Really exhaustive article -- just the kind I love to read. Man I put so many hours into Renegade back in the day. And the TMNT arcade game is STILL a favorite of mine!

Emphatically Seconded!

And for anyone wanting to hear some Yuzo Koshiro goodness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE_1M8Ci ... re=related 20 years on and that music still gets me in the mood to play Streets of rage.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

This was one of the best articles I've read in a long while on the site. A really great read, and even alerted me to the existence of Sengoku 3. Now if I can just find it. :)

I'm so glad you recognized God hand not just by name but you also talked a bit about it. It's truly my favorite beatemup out there right now.

Excellent article, particularly interested in the IGS stuff you mentioned, I played a horror themed metal slug style game by them once but have forgotten what it was called. Is there stuff/board available to emulate?

Thanks guys, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I actually did something else beat'em up related for the site that you guys will hopefully like too. Let's just say I wanted to spotlight some games that couldn't be covered in the 101 article and maybe provide a broader look at the genre's history

Yeah, Sengoku III is pretty awesome. I've played it through an emulator. I'd love to own a copy though. Of course, I'd love to own an actual Neo Geo too

I didn't actually know about that. That's interesting

I was actually never a huge fan of God Hand, but I tried to be objective and I know a lot of beat'em up fans love and respect the game, so I gave it a spotlight in the article

I actually learned about IGS just recently. I was fascinated to hear that someone actually released a 2-d arcade beat'em up just TWO YEARS AGO! I didn't think anyone made arcade beat'em ups anymore, but they released Oriental Legend 2 in 2008. It's a bit hard to get info on their games, but I'll let you know if I find out anything. Here's some cool videos to let you see some of their games in action though:

I've actually done a bit of poking about and their games are supported in 'Neo Final Burn Alpha'... Finding the roms is a bit harder though...
