what lesser known rpg's do you like?

Post by grittykitty »

i figured this section of the forum needed some extra threads

what rpg's outside of the well known circuit (such as zelda, final fantasy, shining force, dragon warrior, phantasy star, etc) do you enjoy?

i liked landstalker, doraemon (#4?) on the original gameboy, sweet home (english patched rom), willow (nes), and the ranma rpg on super nes (though not a good rpg by any means, i just really love the ranma series)

Sweet Home rules, my ex and I played through it in a few stormy nights, it was pretty cool, I played willow for a while, and bought the game but I don't have much time to play now.

Crysstalis for the NES is also very good, got really far but never finished it

Tales of Phantasia is kinda unknown, does that count?

Also, Skies of Arcadia. It was hailed as being totally awesome when it was released, but few people actually know of it these days.

Lastly.. Dragon Warrior Monsters, maybe?

I really liked Landstalker too.

I finally finished the Wachen Röder for the Saturn and I must say it was worth the 6 bucks I payed for it.(Brand new and everything) It's not an incredible game but for the cheap price it goes for it's pretty good. Plus, theres a text and voice translation that someone did for it on gamefaqs.com so you you know what the hell they're saying. The only thing wrong with the game is that the 3-D scenes for when characters do their super-moves in battle are pretty awful looking... the programers must have known this because they included the option to turn them off. :) Still, if your looking for a good strategy RPG try out Wachen Röder

...and words cannot describe how much I love Skies of Arcadia.(I've only played the Gamecube version)
This game just made me feel awsome with it's endearing likeble characters and Vyse's infectious, indomitable optimism. It's like a prescription anti-depressant, I shit you not!
During the time I was playing it, I think my optimism and zeal for life were at an all time high. I started living by the motto "What Would Vyse Do?"... no matter what was happening in my life I would just be like "Vyse wouldn't give up and neither should I!" Hahahaha... I know that sounds lame but it literaly changed my whole outlook on life. Heh, I should start making "WWVD" bracelets...

Some decent PC ones

Post by Ivo »

Dink Smallwood is sort of Zelda like action RPG game for the PC. It used to be shareware but is now freeware, so well worth a look and to top it, after you complete the story, you can get user made mods for it, called "Dink modules" (however when I was playing it there wasn't really anything that was better than the main one, and not many that were that good)

I have to get round to finishing Laxius Power, and looking into its sequels. Again, this is a PC freeware game, but is more of a regular console styled, round based RPG.

If you console fans haven't dipped you heads (or feet :P) on PC style RPGs like the Elder Scrolls series, and some of the many excellent games by BioWare, you should give it a go one of these days. Many of the older ones would be cheap enough and run in a modest PC, and you won't mind with slightly outdated graphics if you are into retrogaming afterall.

well it isnt for a console but did anyone play Anachronox from Ion Storm..i played it to the end and i liked it since it had some funny cutscenes and the combat system was very similar to Final Fantasy but without the cursed random battles. Not sure if it runs good on Xp tho it kept freezing during loading screens last time i tried it on a xp but that was a long time ago som1 has problaby made a patch.

I second the Crystalis nomination. One of the best action RPGs for the NES.

I really liked Cosmic Fantasy 2 for the TGCD. It wasn't that great a game, play-wise. Thinks like poison and petrifiction not working and so forth kinda sucked. But the story was awesome. Any game in which your whole point is to save the girl, to hell with the rest of the world, and in order to beat the bad guy to save the world you have to kill the girl rocks just by its very nature.

I really liked Legend of Oasis on the Saturn. I know that's more action oriented, but I nominate it anyway!

rpgs

It's strange, a game like Panzer Dragoon Saga is very well known for how great it is, but few have actually played it. That would be #1 for me. I also think that Shining Force III is awesome for how few have ever played it. I REALLY tried to get into the Final Fantasy Tactics games on PS and GBA but they just don't feel as good. To bad SFIII had such limited play in the US.
-I love the Wonderboy series that gets more like RPGs the further along it gets
-Landstalker is amazing but Dark Savior and Time Stalkers are major let downs as followups
-Crusader of Centy
-There's a Shining Force-esq game for Game Gear called Crystal Warriors that I used to love and Shining Force on Game Gear is great too
-Shadowrun on Genesis, SNES game is totally dif
-Crystalis
-Skies of Arcadia is probably my favorite totally traditional console RPG

I thought that E.G.G. on the Dreamcast was pretty cool, I also enjoyed the D&D games on the Intellivision.
