Finally re-bought a Gamecube

Post by Reprise »

Well thank you to all of you guys here at Racketboy who have been talking about the Gamecube a lot recently. I had been thinking about buying one again and re-buying my collection for a while, but wasn't really thinking about actually doing it anytime soon. Anyways I was in my local games shop the other day and saw they had a load of Gamecube stuff for sale and just thought 'f*ck it, why not?'

I managed to get a Gamecube with 2 controllers, a memory card, and 8 games for £60. Which seemed like a fairly good deal. I got Second Sight, Super Monkey Ball, Metroid Prime, Starfox Adventures, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil Remake, Viewtiful Joe and Soul Calibur 2. All fantastic games in my opnion, and most I've owned before.

I sold my Gamecube years ago and it's amazing how much I forgot about it and the games.

I'm thinking about buying these games next: Super Mario Sunshine, Zelda: Wind Waker, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4 (this isn't a priority though, because I own the PC verson), Resident Evil 0, Timesplitters 2, Super Smash Bros Melee, Killer7, Metal Gear Solid, Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia, and F Zero GX.

I have no idea how expensive those games are (or any GC games really), so I'll acquire those over time. Is there any games I've missed that I should definitely check out? Any suggestions you have? Which ones are cost the most and least? I have checked out Racketboy's articles, but was just interested in all of you guys' opinions. I did used to have a huge Gamecube collection though, so I will mostly be re-buying the games I used to own as well as buying ones I've never owned. I just can't quite remember all the ones I used to own unless I really think about it lol.

Edit: Forgot to ask, but is it worth getting the 'Free Loader' disc to play imports? and are there any good import games? I live in PAL land. Thanks :)

First of all, congratulations on your new Gamecube! I'm sure you will have a great time. It is a great time to buy right now, because the system and games are so cheap. I highly recommend buying Tales of Symphonia and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes right away. They're some of the biggest purchases [in price and quality] to a Gamecube library, so it is best to get them early on. As you probably already know, I have started a blog about the Gamecube, where every post is a new reason to own the system! I have the link to it in my signature, if you are interested.

Even though there are problems with the save features in the PAL format I'd recommend Mr. Driller Drill Land.

Also Pac Man Vs and Ikaruga if you don't have it for DC.

Agreed though - great start. The GC is so good. I'd also highly recommend getting a GBA Player for it.

I recommend getting a couple of wavebirds (wireless controllers). Congrats on getting back into the cube. They're pretty cheap nowadays.

Yeah, Wavebrids are great; I have 4 of them, and they are perfect for multiplayer. Easily one of the best wireless controllers I've ever used.

Thanks lisalover, I'm aware of your blog and think it's great. Your review on Tales of Symphonia I really enjoyed, so I'm definitely thinking about picking that up. Especially since I have fond memories of playing it over my friend's house years ago.

Thanks chupon, I forgot to mention Ikaruga. I most likely will buy that at some point since I love it and don't own the DC version.

About the GB Player. My games shop actually had that in stock for £18 (works out at about US $30-35 I'd imagine). 1 - is this a good deal? 2 - Why does everyone here praise the GB Player so much? I'm sorry, I don't mean that to sound in a condescending way. I'm just interested in why it's so recommended. Keep in mind here that I don't really have much interest in playing GB/GBA games anymore... But I might consider picking one up if you guys really reckon it's worth it. My main priority at the moment though is picking up games :)

Also, do any of you know if it's worth getting the 'Free Loader' disc to play imports? and are there any good import games?

Thanks guys.

Cheers for the Wavebird recomendation. Will look into prices. And Pikimin too. I'm not too bothered about Pikmin 1 to be honest (I know blashemy right? But I've completed it a million times as it was my first Gamecube game when I first bought one and my brother recently bought it for the Wiil, so I've completed again it recently), but Pikmin 2 I will hopefully buy. It's just a bit expensive for me until I'm getting more money.

Edit: Checked out your blog lisalover. Really love the homebrew post. The stuff about emulators for even the N64 and PSX, I never knew. Great stuff!

Congrats on the purchase. GCN is the only console I've bought 3 times. Oh wait... I have two of them now. So I've bought 4 Gamecubes in my life. Haha. As most will tell you, the GCN + GBPlayer = my favorite console.

And on that note, the reason so many of us plug the GBPlayer is two-fold. First of all, for many of us Game Boy games hold a lot of nostalgia. Here's a way for us to play these games again but now on a big screen, in Progressive Scan if you have component cables, using whatever controller or arcade stick you like. It's great. The other big reason for me is this: take the 600 or so games in the Gamecube library, then add them to the I don't know how many thousands of Game Boy, GBC, and GBA games released and you have one of the biggest and most diverse game libraries available. Name a game series or IP or classic game, and there's probably a port or sequel or demake or something available. :)
