I picked up a slim PS3 fairly recently, which unfortunately means I can't play any of the many PS2 fighters I own. Sad as that is, I'll be fine as long as I can sink my teeth into some PS3 fighters.
Outside of the obvious Marvel vs Capcom 2, Super Street Fighter IV and Soul Caly the fourth, does the PS3 have anything worth checking out? Since the PS3 is region free, I'll gladly import if needed. I'm not a Tekken fan.

Re: Recommended PS3 Fighters
BlazBlue is the obvious suggestion, but a sequel is coming out, so you might want to hold off until then (to either buy the old version for cheap or the new one).
There's also King of Fighters XII, which is rather divisive among fighting game fans, to say the least.
You might also want to try Virtua Fighter 5 if you're into 3D fighters. Lastly, there's MK vs. DC too, which not half bad, from what I'm told.

Isn't KoF 13 supposed to be coming out soonish? Also, you'll want to get Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

I found MK vs DC incredibly hideous and very boring. It's still super stiff and ugly to see in action and none of the actual gameplay has done anything interesting to make it worth playing. A very bland and frustrating experience.

Re: Recommended PS3 Fighters
Don't forget Playstation 1 games still work on the Slim.. Darkstalkers 1 & 3, Street Fighter Alpha 1-3, Rival Schools, Ehrgeiz, Bloody Roar, and Soul Blade/Edge ring bells. (I'd suggest the King of Fighter series, but they're pretty mediocre on the Ps1 because of lag and lost animation.)
Everything mentioned for current gen is pretty solid.. Check out Battle Fantasia, as well - Think BlazBlue/Guilty Gear meets an RPG. I'd love to hear if anybody knows anything about import PS3 fighters - or anything PS-exclusive that's non- US...

Blazblue calamity trigger or Blazblue continuum shift (comes out july 27th) If you like MVSC2 you'll love the first one if not you might wanna wait for continuum shift cause the fixed a lot of the unlimited combos and re balanced everything still the best looking 2D fighter this generation though!

Virtua Fighter 5 is the only fighter i have at the moment for the PS3 and its amazing. I would highly reccomend it to anyone.
I haven't slept for ten days, because that would be too long.

King of Fighters XII: Good if you plan to play locally with others and prefer a balanced roster. Not for you if online is a must and/or have to have dazzling moves and a huge roster to entertain you.
Virtua Fighter 5: Read Above.
Marvel vs Capcom 2: The antithesis of KOF12, it's got dazzling moves, huge roster, etc., but the balance is about as bad as Joe Shmoe's MUGEN build. Still, this is the perfect game to play with friends online or locally, so long as you aren't friends with a "That Guy." You know, the only who only plays as the cheapest combination of characters possible. We all know at least one of them.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix: If you don't mind paying for SF2 again for the umpteenth time, ya can't go wrong. A lot of people nit-nick about the graphics, but they're lying. It's not the graphics that suck, it's the animation - and they only kept the animation looking bad because they knew the purists would flip out if they gave characters more frames.
Street Fighter IV: It's slow, it's unbalanced (grapplers being heavily favored), the online is a bit shoddy, the character line-up is boring and uninspired... Skip it for SSF4.
Super Street Fighters IV: Fixes almost everything that was wrong with SF4. Much better character line-up, more characters can compete, it's sped up a bit and the online is much more flexible.
BlazBlue - Calamity Trigger: It's a lot of fun. Unfortunately, some characters have very clear advantages over others, and playing online against characters with easily-abusable cheap tactics is more an exercise in frustration than anything. However, the single-player is enough to justify the purchase. Or, you could just wait for the sequel to come out on July 27.
Soul Calibur IV: I felt cheated with this game, but then again, I did buy the collector's edition when it released at $80. I'd say it's a fun enough game for casual play, but the online is... atrocious. You'll be very lucky to have a match that isn't interrupts by at least one 1-2 second pause. Without a doubt, the most fun I got out of this game was the flexible character creator... but now I have ModNation Racers to scratch that itch, and much better than SC4 ever could.

Soulcalibur is an abused franchise that doesn't know where it's going. That said I wouldn't mind a hack-and-slash entry using its spectacular engine, if indeed it's possible to pull one off.the7k wrote:Soul Calibur IV: I felt cheated with this game, but then again, I did buy the collector's edition when it released at $80. Re: Recommended PS3 Fighters
I wouldn't say its abused, but I would agree it doesn't know where it's going. The problem I find with Soul Calibur is that it already hit its peak, though depending on who you ask it was either Soul Calibur or Soul Calibur 2 (or the rare Soul Edge fan who hated the rest of the series...). After that, the tweaks have really hurt it more than helped it, and while certain new modes are interesting, they feel like more of a gimmick than anything else.
Honestly though, what can they do with it? The fighting was perfect a decade ago, how could they innovate it? The character editor is not nearly as good as Virtua Fighter's system, and the character creator is nice, but feels limited by the weapon styles in SC4 and completely overblown by said styles in SC3. Alternate game modes like coin collecting are nice and all, but they're not the meat of the game, and having played through some of that tower thing, I really want a true Survival Mode back.
Look, I love the Soul series, I really do. Mitsurugi is one of my favorite fighting game characters. I'd say that Soul Calibur is what got me into 3D fighters and playing fighters with friends. But when I look at the series, I see it peak, plateau, and then begin sliding down.
Anyway, enough of my ranting. Do yourself a favor and buy Virtua Fighter 5. While I wouldn't necessarily say it's better in terms of fighting than its predecessors, it's consistent, which is a good thing considering how highly I praise VF games. And the Quest mode feels like it's the meat of the game, as opposed to arcade, because the Quest mode is basically a simulated series of arcades and tournaments, featuring AI with varying skill levels and unique character themes. The game does a bang up job of capturing that old competitive arcade spirit, and I've happily spent days in it fighting all challengers.
