Retro Gamer Music

Post by Razzmatazz »

I know this is probably a bit niche, but as a massive hip hop fan, I have stumbled across a recent phenomenon in underground hip hop: Gamer rap. There is a rapper called Random aka Mega Ran (like Mega Man, clever huh?) who has been doing albums for a few years now, he did one all about manga, and recently released a great album that samples only NES games called Forever Famicom. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post direct links here, but snippets can be found here:

There are also some free compilation downloads of gamer rap here:

I know there is a fella on Youtube who does video game blends (MixerProductions) which are great, such as mixing Lady Gaga and Jet Set Radio, is there any other retro game music that people can put me onto?

have you heard Team Teamwork's albums? Ocarina Of Rhyme and Vinyl Fantasy VII for instance? I'm a big hip hop fan too. I wasn't super crazy about these albums, since the acapellas have been used a million times. But still. Interesting.

Interesting. I have not heard of these no, I will have a look for them later (as I am on a night shift at work atm). Ocarina of Rhyme just sounds awesome! Are they acapellas rhyming about games or just famous acapellas put on game beats?

Ocarina is just some indie hip hop acapellas (tracks you've heard no doubt) over music from Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Similarly, Vinyl Fantasy is the same thing -- semi-(underground?)-popular acapellas over FFVII soundtrack instrumentals.

I loved those. I'm going to look into more.
I am a huge fan of Hip-Hop, even sold some mix tapes with my turntables back in the late 90's and early 2000's.
Thanks.

No worries mate. I think that Forever Famicom is the best album I've heard in a long time, it's just really fresh hearing about how cartridges are better than discs, or what not to do at comic conventions. Serious topics that need to be covered more often!!

One song that pops to mind that samples a game (Shenmue) is American Beauty by Granite State. Just a song about women but as a big Shenmue fan I thought it was a novel beat.

A song that was released last year by Fresh Daily, called Videogamin' is also an essential listen for anyone on this forum!!! I'd embed Youtube vids but not sure how.
