Putting together a Manly collection of NES games. Thoughts?

Post by ThrashOmen »

So I'm getting a compilation of the NES's manliest games together, Here is my criteria for deciding this:

Action - Punching everything, launching rockets into everyone, knifes into the faces, enemies splatting, Wicked bosses, unforgiving enemies and platforming under pressure.

Excellent Soundtrack - Bad ass blips and bloops including thrash style riffs and or classical shred metal (ala castlevania)

Story - Are you a bad enough dude to rescure the president?

It's not hard to point out badassery, so what games am I missing from this list?

Bad Dudes
Batman
Batman Returns
Batman - Return of the Joker
Battletoads
Battletoads & Double Dragon
Bionic Commando
Captain America and the Avengers
Castlevania
Castlevania III - Draculas Curse
Contra
Contra Force (Keeping)
Double Dragon
Double Dragon II
Double Dragon III
Ghosts 'N Goblins
Gradius
Gradius II
Gyruss
Image Fight
Jackal
Legend of Zelda, The
Life Force (/salamander)
Megaman
Megaman II
Megaman III
Megaman IV
Megaman V
Megaman VI
Metroid
Metal Gear (DuncanIsacc)
Monster in my Pocket
Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden II
Ninja Gaiden III
Recca (Shooter from Nintendo Summer Carnival 92')
River City Ransom (keeping)
Robocop
Robocop 2
Robocop 3
Rygar
Shatterhand
Smash T.V.
Splatter House
Spy Hunter
Super Spy Hunter
Super C
Super Turrican
TMNT II: The Arcade Game (Limewater)
TMNT III - The Manhattan Project
TMNY: The tournament fighters (Limewater/How did I forget this!?)
Trojan

Pending:
Bonk's Adventure
Abbadox - The deadly inner war

Ellert Micheal:
Ninja Crusaders

the7k:
SCAT
Shadow of the Ninja

Limewater:
Heavy Barrel
Guerrilla War
Werewolf: The last warrior
Journey to Silius
Gun Smoke
Rush'N'Attack

Hobie-Wan:
Burai Fighter
Section Z
Powerblade
Vice Project Doom (If this is what I think it is, I'm pretty sure it's going up)

Not Accepted:
Skate or Die - Ok skating game but not exactly the terrorist beast puncher I'm looking for.

Choujin Sentai Jetman - I'm guessing this is the origin of power rangers? Either way it was fun but too cartoony. Plus you can be pink.

Golgo 13 - I did not enjoy this game at all :/ The graphics were pretty terribl and the way he stands makes me think he was molested with a broken mop handle. Plus, I used to play a game similar to this that was WAAAY better... Secret Ties! Which I'm not including either so don't feel bad.

The adventures of Bayou Billy - Too generic of a beat em' up. Trying to punch an enemy from full life to death is too tricky as you can never get any combos in without taking one to the chin.

Air Fortress - Great game! And an awesome idea, however a little too cartoony.

Friday the 13th - This game is horrible. Come on.

Kid Niki - Another great game, and by IREM, one of my favorite companies. Too cartoony, plus the arcade version is way better.

Ikari warriors - Too cartoony, yes, kind of slow gameplay, Guerilla wars kicks complete ass though and takes it's spot.

Dirty Harry - This game reminds me of the song that Clint Eastwood sings at the end of Gran Torino... I think that explains enough... I like the reference though! Good effort!

Astyanax - Never heard of it but I checked it out, pretty cool game, some of the power ups are a little confusing and it is pretty cartoony. Decent game though.

Rescue: The Embassy Mission - Too slow and just not fun. I love the idea though I just wish it could have been more action oriented instead of trying to incorporate so much stealth.

Rolling Thunder - Good Game, My room mate has this actual game, If it wasn't for the rainbow colored moltors It would have a chance though, haha.

Die Hard - Never really liked this game, too frustrating and not fun.

If you're name and game are still under pending then they made it in! Also, I am reevaluating Castlevania II.

I will update the complete list and may do a little more pruning but for now I have to go to work!

Bayou Billy. Nothing manlier than that storyline: Billy's best ho gets kidnapped, so he decides to fuck some shit up.

Come to think about it, "Double Dragon," another very manly game, also has a protagonist named "Billy" who fucks shit up because his best ho got kidnapped.

Air Fortress!!!
Air Fortress has a fairly typical alien invasion storyline: the people of the planet Farmel, having recently gained the technology for space travel, eagerly explored the galaxy only to find a herd of monstrous "Air Fortresses" moving in their direction. Like the creatures in the later movie Independence Day, the Fortresses behave like interstellar locusts, consuming all of the resources and living things in their path. The Space Federation sends their mightiest fleet, but they are quickly eliminated by the powerful Fortresses. In a final gambit, they send a single warrior (Hal Bailman), outfitted with a shielded spacesuit, powerful weapons, and small lightship to infiltrate the Fortresses and destroy them from the inside out.

Also, I love Shatterhand. I wish I had his sunglasses..

Dude fuck you got the box! I don't have the box to shit.

You know I used to have the SNES boxes to all the Megaman X games when I was a little kid, and like a twat, my mom tossed them because she thought they were trash. As if it was a snickers wrapper or some shit!

Also, Shatterhand is amazing, but the japanese version of it Sol-Brain has more style to it imo.

I can't vouch for the actual game, but the Golgo 13 character is pretty manly and there are two NES games off that manga so maybe. I have been meaning to pick up Top Secret Episode for awhile now.

How about Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (Not the version that replaced Tyson with Mr. Dream). Little Mac is practically a midget, he can pull off a pink track suit, and he has to go up against crazy Mike Tyson at the end. Plus all the crazy dudes he beats the crap out of. Most of them weigh at least twice as much as he does. Last, but not least, there is the bad ass Doc Louis, Mac's trainer who taught him everything about boxing.

You know, I've never been into Mike Tyson's Punch Out, but I will consider it!

Yeah, I came across that Shatterhand CIB for 5 bucks! I already had the cartridge & manual, but for that price I'd be pissed at myself for passing that up!

Bummer about your Megaman boxes...I, too, have a mom who throws away stuff I want to keep..

Also, I think it's funny Metroid made the "Manly collection" list hehe
