Anyone got a HD webcam?

I saw a messenger client advertising the new version would have support for HD video, which made me think that maybe HD webcams are becoming more popular and affordable.

Anyone here has one? I must say that the definition in regular webcams isn't too good IMO, so I'm glad to see this particular technology moving forward. Regular PCs have handled higher definitions for years, so I guess it is also a matter of the broadband speeds.

Yep, at my work (I test Live Messenger ), we get to test out the newest version of the Microsoft Lifecam. The camera boasts 720p resolution, which is more than enough for a common video chat. The resolution is fine enough to hold a book or piece of paper up and the other user should be able to read the page without any issues.

The camera is on the high end ($79), but my friends have found nifty uses for it. Like one of them connects it to their netbook and shoulder mounts the webcam when he skydives.

Hmm, looking around, I was not even aware that a lower budget HD webcam was released. Still boasting the 720p resolution, there are models going for as low as $49. I remember some 2 years back paying $30 for a logitech with a 320x240 resolution

Yup, I've got the PS Eye for the PS3 hooked up to my computer and it encodes HD very nicely along with having a built in mic that doesn't suck.

Best part is that at $40 new and $25 used these things are a steal.

I saw a real cheap one claiming to be HD, like 15 bucks new or something. Must be fake.

I'll wait a few more months and then I'll look into a couple of used ones - next time I'm going abroad it would be nice to have HD chat.

You know, I never got that reference in Robocop... Is it from some U.S. pop culture that I was not aware when I watched it, or is it basically from Robocop originally but it caught on?

I don't really know to be honest, the first time I ever heard it was in RoboCop.

It's probably just a play off old US TV game shows, but the actual phrase is from Robocop.
