A Very Happy Birthday to...

Post by Luke »

NHL HOCKEY, Electronic Arts, Sega Genesis.

Happy 20th buddy, I can't believe you've never gathered dust in my gameroom. There are many things to thank you for. I'll never forget your opening music and title screen. The way I could play with actual hockey stars that I worshiped will also not be forgotten. You allow others to play without penalties, without icing, without lines, but I love the fact that I could play with all the rules in tact. Love the fact that teams had their opening music played on an organ. Love the fact fights were included. Love how you kept up with all the stats, and that during playoffs, you show us highlights from other games.

Sure, '94 on the sega cd and 2002 on the PS2 are better games, but without you, they wouldn't be where they are today.

I love this game. And it's in the game.

I loved 2002, but alot of Hockey fans seemed to really hate it. I loved the commentary. I wish they'd do it like that again.

Happy birthday NHL, I've loved you since '93

This begs the question: Skinny, Medium, Fat; what's your team made of?

Aaahhh how far the EA NHL series has come. I remember a few years back everyone was like EA's NHL is done and it's all about [insert name here] from now on. EA is still going strong. They may not be perfect from one year to the next, but they are still delivering and working to make the game as enjoyable as possible. I know I have said this before, but I am on my 3rd playthrough of dynasty mode in NHL 2006. Not a single time has been the same, different team goals, different drafting/trading strategies, players that have been good one time around suck the next. Check out EA's site as I think you can play one version of NHL online. Not sure what one.

As for NES Ice Hockey, radical! I have Ice Hockey for the Atari 2600 too, but it leaves something to be desired even though I am a hardcore Atari fan. Still neat to start from there and see the evolution of hockey as a video game.

I usually played with all fatties. I never really felt like I had enough control over my team to make having a mixed team particularly helpful, so I just had four completely interchangeable guys. Also, I guess I didn't really play it very seriously, and rarely ever played one-player mode.

Limewater, didn't you get the memo? We're not supposed to agree on things; 4 fatties for me, or 3 fatties with a Medium if I'm playing with an awful team.
