Reverse shump

Post by metaleggman »

I just thought of something that might be interesting: a reverse shump. What I mean by this is that you play the role of launching the waves of attacks and controlling the gigantic bosses to defend yourself from the one tiny little ship coming to defeat you and your army. What you could do is use the mouse to create a line, press a button, and then launch an attack on the computer controlled player. This could be either done in real time during the game, done before hand somewhat, or even as a puzzle. The puzzle form would be where you would try to defeat the ship in the shortest amount of time, with the least amount of enemies, and whatever rules may apply. It would be kindof like the Peter Molyneaux game where you play the dungeon master. Anyone think this would be interesting or think there is a way to improve this idea? I'd love to hear your guy's ideas on the subject. :)

It would work on the DS with the stylus.

I was actually thinking about this idea too one time. It would be kind of nifty if tons of the letters on your keyboard corresponded with a shot from each of the grunts at your disposal. If the enemy ship made it all the way to the boss, you could have the ability to orchestrate the bullet patterns of death.
However, you'd have to really reimagine the whole gameplay, because what happens once you defeat the lone ship sent to destroy you? I think it'd be pretty interesting to have a game where you controlled the unwieldly yet overwhelming force rather than fighting against it.

I was thinking about this too. I guess it could be something more like an RTS just where you have all these little ships trying to defeat your base for the bounty. As you destroy more ships, your bounty becomes bigger and so you must defend yourself better. It could still be a shump format for each entrance way for the little ships. Plus, it could be expanded to either a much larger scale (like setting up units all around the planet you control or it could a smaller scale. I think this would be the process of the game:

Build your initial battle station-->Fight and destroy the bounty hunter's ships-->Rebuild and expand.

Think of it kindof like the flash game defend your castle, except you are the bad guy's castle. :)
How are your guys' takes on this process of fighting?

Change Air Blade is kinda like this, at least a little. It's a one-on-one shooter (and it works in MAME). You play the attacker while the computer plays the defender, and after a while perspective shifts. You get to use neat boss-like maneuvers when you are the defender.

For a review that doesn't screw up explaining the game the way I just did, see the shmups.com review here:
