A Walkthru of Japanese Game Shops

Post by hashiriya1 »

These are two different game shops in two different parts of Japan.
The purpose of this thread is to show those of you who are interested
what game shops in Japan look and feel like. The reason I did two
shops is so you can compare two random shops that I often visit.

These two shops are not retro shops, they are just the typical
run-of-the-mill game shop. I would say about 95% of game shops
in Japan carry some sort of retro selection.

I know some of you plan to visit Japan in the future. I just ask
that you please respect the shops. DO NOT take pictures inside
the shop without asking permission first. In Japan, they are very
sensitive about people taking pictures inside shops. I asked permission
in both of these shops.

First up is SEAGULL. Seagull is a small chain of shops, mostly in the Tohoku region
of Japan.

SEAGULL Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture

Upon entering, this is what you see. Used systems in glass cases.
This is to try to get you to buy a used system instead of new.

To the left of that is the new release shelf.

The doujin and major label hentai games.

The going rate for a used Final Fantasy XIII is 980 to 1280 yen. ($10~$13 USD)

Outside the shop, plenty of Gacha-Gacha machines.
Next to that is the relaxation area equipped with ashtray and vending machine.

Chameleon Club in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture.

750 kilometers away from that Seagull is another shop I frequent.
Chameleon Club in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
This shop is more retro-heavy with good prices on most items.
The day I went they were having a sale. All SFC games that are
not in the glass case are 150 yen. Some games were 1500 yen regular
price, so I swooped on em.

Upon entering, here is what you see.
The newly redesigned XBOX360 gets bottom-shelf treatment.
Pretty sad that a PS3 Phat gets better placement.

To the side of that is the rarity showcase.

Like in most game shops in Japan, the XBOX360 shelf is
way in the back. Out of sight, out of mind.

So, are you in Japan again right now or are these older photos? That price seems a good deal for a Neo Geo bundle.

Thanks for the info & photos. Very much appreciated. I noticed that the Gamecube component cables are around $35. Those Japanese Ebay sellers are making a killing on them.

why is it that every time I see pics of a japanese shop it's always huge and PACKED wall to wall with stuff?

are they all like that or do people just post pics of the good ones?

The funny part is, that is kinda pricey for Japan standards.
They usually go for an average of 1200 yen. I saw that and was gonna
grab it until i saw the price.
