Unusual/unique interactive software

Post by Pulsar_t »

Anyone here has interest in unusual software products? Sort of like

Image

77 Million Paintings by Brian Eno

and

Image

Peter Gabriel's explora1 (Can't get this to work on XP)

Image

Mike Oldfield's Tres Lunas

Whenever I think of unique software I keep coming back these three highly-experimental interactive pseudo-games made by UK musicians (I used to hope Jean Michel Jarre would chip in but it's highly unlikely at this point, though admittedly I like his Aero DVD, highly original). There also was the You Don't Know Jack series but trivia games are very mainstream nowadays.

Surely there are more unique interactive experiences out there that cannot be classified as pure games. Maybe innovative screensavers?

OK, that was tight. I love art that makes use of modern technology and thinks outside the box.

I haven't played them, but perhaps Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time, Devo - Adventures of Smart Patrol, or The Residents PC games?

I had Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time. It was pretty good for it's time. Click around and lots of goofy Gilliam stuff happens, and if you're lucky you get to watch your favorite sketches in grainy low res.

I found this a while back. Looked interesting, but I couldn't get it to run in Win 3.1 under Dosbox. If I ever get a 486 I'll try again.

Peter Gabriel FTW
I put rocket fuel in my vaccuum and it started a fire in my house. I am so mad at Black & Decker for making a vaccuum that I can't do what I want with.

Indeed. 320x240 quicktime videos aren't so amazing anymore.

Weirdo guitar aficionado Buckethead released an album under the anagram name Death Cube K that was called Dreamatorium and included a fractal generation program that let you play around in different fractal sets, zooming in and out of their infinitely complex patterns.

Dreamatorium looks interesting.. Anyway the truth apparently is that we mostly use our GFLOPS-capable computers for mostly mundane tasks. It's a shame all this processing power isn't put into creative applications for everyday users.

I'm thinking of running folding@home. Any advice?
