Is there a list of nice Japanese PSN import-friendly shmups? Would be nice.

It's not an import, or an actual PS1 game, but Gundemonium Recollection just hit PSN yesterday. I played it, and while it's a very good collection of shooters, with a couple really cool tricks up its' sleeve [I even saw one point in the game where a line of enemies made an actual maze out of continuously-firing bullets!], the thing that struck me most about it was that everything about it made it look like a PS1 game. The sprites were good, but not Saturn good, the music sounds like the developer wasn't quite ready to make music on a CD medium, and even the menus have that distinctive PS1 arcade port, blocky, "made-in-a-flash" feel. If they had put this game in the PS1 classics section, I wouldn't have thought twice if it was a PS1 game.

hi, actually for rpg´s this would be very important, but for shmups of fighters or arcade games for that matter? there´s not so much to read or to do. As for the specific question, just get the one you like or youtube it or ask if it had English text. Most Japanese shmups have English text DoDonPachi is no exception and it definetly has English text (I am 90% sure about it) and I recommend that game. it is the best shmup on psn PERIOD. I´m going to get it, just need to buy a jpn psn cardRiqz85 wrote:Is there a list of nice Japanese PSN import-friendly shmups? Would be nice.

Yeah Gundemonium and its sequel are pretty alright. I posted a review over here: http://pepsimanvsjoe.blogspot.com/2010/ ... ction.html
Main point that bugs me is that for some reason a number of the enemies don't wear any underwear. Granted it's hard to notice because the screen is usually filled with bullets and/or explosions but that still weirded me out hardcore. Who the heck even does that? I mean yeah if you're on a suicide mission you probably couldn't care less if you were wearing anything but c'mon that doesn't mean I should have to see it.
I think Hipogata Happa or whatever its called is the real deal of the collection. It's a pretty neat vertical shooter where you control dolls armed with heavy explosives. Basically you try to stay alive long enough so that the next enemy you come in contact with you can blow yourself for huge damage and huge points. It's neat how it all works cause instead of having like three lives you can have as many as you can afford from the shop in-between stages. Course it sucks when you get hit by bullet while attempting to bomb an enemy cause if that happens you just die pitifully.
Oh and I got a Japanese PSN account so from what I've played:
Gaia Seed - Totally not worth whatever ridiculous price it goes for. Hell I don't even think it's worth 600 yen. Very uninspired and bland shooter that wouldn't look out of place on the SNES or something.
Dezaemon Kids - Pretty much worth it for the 102 shooters included on the bonus disc. Pretty much all of them use the same weapon system and mechanics but there's some nice variety in the art-style and even some clever stage design every now and again. The comments are also really neat since they tend to feature artwork, photos, and a lot of other stuff that's just really cool to dig through.
Gunners Heaven - It's like Gunstar Heroes but without all of the qualities and uniqueness that made that game a classic. As a "bonus" this game feels very off and you can end up taking a ton of damage if you aren't using the right weapons at the right time, which severely limits experimentation. Oh and they give you this grappling hook but it goes unused for a good majority of the game. Thanks a lot.
Oh and yeah just buy Dodonpachi. It's one of the best games ever made.

Thunder Force V, Soldier Blade and Gate of Thunder would like to argue with you. Fatal 4-Way!d123456 wrote:it is the best shmup on psn PERIOD.
ALL of those could easily claim the title of "best shmup on PSN." All of these games ought to be on EVERY list of to 20 shooters ever (might be some debate with Thunder Force V). Just buy all four and be happy!
If the Japanese PSN gets Sega Saturn games and DC shooter (maybe coming!), then it will be pure bliss. Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, the four Konami Deluxe Packs (PS or Sat), Sexy Parodius (PS or Sat) and Border Down for 900yen each? Yes, please! I'm still waiting for PCE Super CD Winds of Thunder. I dislike the VC since you can only use the games on one system.
