Thoughts on the gold box series of S-rpgs?

Post by randombullseye »

Am the only one who cares about these, at all?

I didn't discover them on the PC. I had three games with my genesis as a kid, Junction, Sonic, and Buck Rodgers Countdown to Doomsday. Buck Rodgers is a part of what's known as the SSI "Gold Box series" which is a bunch of S-rpgs that mostly involve Dungeons & Dragons adaptations, although there were two Buck Rodgers games. Only one of which was on the Genesis, the sequel Matrix Cubed was computers only. :(

I've been trying to locate copies of all these. I played a bit of one of the D&D games a couple years ago, and I was curious if anyone else besides me has? Surely someone likes these?

I played Hilsfar and Azure Bonds back in the day. I don't think Hilsfar is actually a gold-box title though. I've been meaning to get around to these since I got my Apple II, but it's been hard to find the time between Ultima, Wasteland, etc. And these games definitely consume a lot of time.

Champions of Krynn on the Amiga is the reason i got into rpg's in the first place. Also the earlier titles really did not look good on the pc. Sure ega graphics get the job done but had i been introduced to the pc verison of Champions of Krynn all those years ago things might have gone different.

About Buck Rogers on the Mega Drive i never figured why they didn stick to the 1st person view like in the original instead you get some dude with a space helmet representing your party. However i got nothing bad to say about the mega drive port it did get me looking for more rpg's for the mega drive which at that time i had no idea existed and that led me to buy Shining Force 2.

I wouldn't call them SRPGs. They are straight RPGs.

There is the Gamefest 14 Forgotten Realms Classics set you can get. It does not have all of the Gold Box games but it has PoR, CotAB, SotSB and PoD, Gateway and Treasures of the Savage Frontier, Hillsfar, along with the three Eye of the Beholder games and a few others as well.

Meh, maybe they are Strategy RPGs considering the way you position your characters in battles. *shrug*

I played through a chunk of Pool of Radiance with friends, but I never finished it as I got busy with school. It was good but I just hit a period where I drifted away from gaming for a while.

For anyone new to these series

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_Box

And as for emulation i would stick to the Amiga for the earlier titles i have said this before but i cannot overstate that either while these games did not rely that much on sound and music you dont want pc speaker sounds either.

But later titles should sound and look on par or better than the amiga verisons.

For a good beginning game i recommend Champions of Krynn because it's easier to get into rather than Pool of Radiance. For example your party starts at level 2 which may not sound important but level 1 ad&d characters can and will die very easily.

It lets you modify your stats originally intended so you could have the same stats as your favorite pen and paper characters but mostly used to give yourself 18 in all attributes.
It may sound like cheating but you will need all the bonuses to hit and ac you can get to have a chance in the beginning.

During camp you can use the option FIX to automatically heal the party what this does is make the clerics memorize and cast healing spells on the party automatically until everyone is at full health. Instead of doing it manually and it is much more convenient.

And at last it is not overly confusing at the beginning instead of a big town to wander through your beginning place is a outpost presented by a single screen where you can get to the armory, inn and the tavern all at the same time. While it may sound like it robs you off exploring the outpost i'd rather say it just gives you the chance to prepare for adventure more quickly.

I tried a couple SSI games a long time ago. Ran dog slow. Sure it was on the C64, but part of the programming code was in BASIC in these commercial games!

If you start on the Amiga and then switch to the PC you can not transfer your characters over.

Then i suppose it's better overall just to stick to the Amiga versions.
