New to the site looking for advice on Repros.

Post by Trialen »

Hi there. My name is Dialo and I am new to this site. I have been tryin to find info on making snes and genesis repros as im a huge SNES/Genesisfan and to me, they are the ultimate game consoles. So I love all games on there and would love to turn some roms i have into actual playable games. I found some sites that sell repros, but I dont really find it right to sell stuff that actually has no face value. Though i have broken down and bought a few of them. I would still like to do my own so i would not have to pay much money. Does anyone know of any sites that shows these steps and what I would need as far as equipment goes? Someone said that i would need a eeprom burner and eraser, but for actual programming and wiring, what would i need to do? Just looking for friendly advice. I would really love to play some of the Mario and sonic hacks for the super nintendo and genesis witout havin to buy a japanese console.

Unless you're dead set on making carts, you might be better off with a flash cart that you can put the rom hacks on to play.

Welcome Trialen! Always great to have new members with their experiences and ideas. No worries if new or seasoned, everyone can contribute. You could modify your signature link if you want to, and show what systems you own. Also if you have not tried that blue links bar above in particular "Topics" and "Guides", Racketboy has provided a wealth of information on various systems.

Flash cart or since you already have the roms, I'm assuming you emulate on the PC?
You can also emulate the SNES and Genesis on many home consoles for your HD.
Dreamcast, XBox, PS2, Gamecube and the current Gens all have EMUs.

I would definitely recommend getting flash carts instead of making/buying more repros, especially if there are a lot of games you want to play. Making repros = destroying carts. Flash carts will be infinitely easier to use.

Here is an older Racketboy post concerning Flash carts, some member's reviews.

Mod might even combine the two similar posts.
Trialen, use Search, a very powerful tool.

over all a flashcart is better for messing around with rom hacks and such. however building a repro is very satisfying for games you want to HAVE a physical copy of. but they are labor intensive and cost about 20 bucks in parts. and ziggy no one cries when someone murders NHL 96 to turn into a repro for an awesome game. :)

i just built my first trialen today (worked first try WOOOOO). but i can tell you if you can follow a schematic its not super hard. just take it slow. as regarding flash carts i personally have bought a couple from tototek and their product and customer service its top notch.

Yeah, but that's the problem, that's what every one says/thinks. Do you realize how many people must be making repros? Come to me in 10 years when you can't seem to find a copy of NHL 96 or 95 and then tell me there isn't a problem.

yeah but by then my collection will be done. :) also what i would LOVE to see is somthing similar to the NES boards on retro USB only designed for drop in eeprom's (up to 4) that would solve the problem :)

If your goal is to accumulate a ton of games that have been translated. A Flash Cart will be your best option.

Then you're completely missing the point. And that's the most self centered remark I've heard from anyone on this argument.

THAT'S what I've been wanting for a while now. I've actually emailed him to inquire about it, and he made it sound as if he was working on it. The main problem, that I can see, is that there is no clone chip for the SNES CIC yet (though I think people are working on it). Without a clone CIC, you would have to desecrate a real SNES game anyway.

There's the possibility of using the "pass through" design on the Super 3D Noah's Ark, which would require you to plug a real SNES game into the top of it (to make use of the game's CIC).

I've actually looked into getting SNES boards and cart shells made up, but it's very expensive to buy in to. And boards with 4 DIP sockets wouldn't be ideal. A much better idea would be to have a model that takes a T SOP flash memory instead, which you could have the equivalent of 4 EPROMs with.

Exactly.
