Need Some Shmup Suggestions

Post by ReddMcKnight »

OK. Here's the deal. I just beat a DS RPG called Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and quite frankly, I'm pretty pissed. This game had what I think is quite possibly the most BORING ending in the history of RPGs, and Video Games in General. It really pisses me off when a great game has a dumb ending...Anyway, getting to the point, I'd like to switch to a different Genre for a while. That Genre being Shoot'em Ups. However, I'd like to also know if there are, aside from the generic Shmups, if there are Shmups with Stories. That is, a Shmup with Prologue Text, Intermission Texts, and Ending Text. I am, however, open to all types of them, so suggest away please. Thank you.

P.S.
Zero Wing is an example of a Shmup with a story. Also, is the Sega CD Shmup Keio Flying Squadron any good?

I've done a couple of Shmup articles so far for GBA on my blog.

Sigma Star Saga. It's an RPG but all the combat is horizontal SHMUP action. It's also pretty affordable.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I loved Keio Flying Squadron.

I don't know why, but it's one of my favorite shooters.

It's just so damn cute and fun. The music's great, the sprites are huge.

Play it.

Radiant Silvergun has a story, but there's that high price tag. I have a copy I'm willing to sell if you really want it. :)

Sexy Parodius has a pretty funny story.
Also, is the Sega CD Shmup Keio Flying Squadron any good?
Hell yes it is!!! AND, it has a story with anime scenes and everything; good and funny anime scenes! It's basically a must buy if you like silly cute 'em ups.

Me and TwoD were discussing Sexy Parodius in the IRC. I'm quite interested in it now. :)

It's easily one of my favourite shoot 'em ups. It's a bit like Darius or Outrun (yup!), in that there are multiple level paths you can take to finish the game. Unlike Darius or Outrun, however, where you choose your next level at the end of the current level, you have a specific goal to meet in each level (ie. collect a certain number of items, kill a certain number of one kind of enemy, etc.). The next level is determined by whether you achieve the current level's goal or not.

Add to this the insaneness that is the Parodius series mixed with the awesomeness that is Gradius and funny anime scenes between the levels, and you have a simply wonderful shooter!

FTR, I will play this over Radiant Silvergun anyday.

If you've got a Wii, Ultimate Shooting Collection is pretty damn fun.
