What Are Your Favorite Arcade Games of the 80's?

Post by racketboy »

My 80's favorites were...
Road Blasters -- I loved most every racing games, but I couldn't resist blowing up other cars and grabbing the extra weapons dropped by that little jet.
Double Dragon -- the original brawler in my world.
Dig Dug -- I loved the personality of the game to this day.
Ms. Pac-Man -- definite classic
Rampage -- how can you pass up bashing a bunch of buildings down?

For most of the 80s I was under 10 so I was a bit of a graphics whore. The two games I remember the most are Dragon's Lair and Mach 5 because of the visual feasts they were. I also remember a Pole Position machine I frequented for a while.

Woo! Now you're talking!

My two faves are Marble Madness and Yi Ar Kung Fu. Plus obvious stuff like New Zealand Story and Rainbow Islands

Thinking about doing a hidden gems for arcade RB? I've got a whoooole list of the blighters :)
Number 1 80s hidden arcade gem for me: Rompers.

It wasn't on my list, but I might think about it once I'm done with the consoles :)

Really? I think you should do it and split it into 80s / 90s like this thread. Arcade is the ultimate is retro gaming right? 8)

Never played much in the arcades

Post by Ivo »

Arcades in Portugal used to be for over 16 (with lots of people smoking) and in any case the machines were sort of expensive.

I have played ports though, and I think a clear number 1 for me is Bubble Bobble. Taito has a lot of amazing arcade games, New Zealand Story is also quite good.

Sweet. Favorite topic time.

Warlords Cocktail -- as opposed to the standup version, this supported four players.

Marble Madness -- Mesmerizing in its elegance. Still beautiful today.

Mr. Do -- It used to be Dig Dug -- I even have a Dig Dug cabinet, but Do is better.

Tempest -- Insanely cool SHMUP. Simple, but awesome vector graphics and sound.

Q*Bert -- Kinda repetitive and can be boring because of it, but for some reason, I really like the entire package. Something about QBert falling off the playfield with the pinball solenoid in the bottom of the cabinet for that deadly THUNK sound, simply rocked.

Food Fight -- Another pseudo-SHMUP. No one's favorite except mine. If you cleared a level extremely well, you'd get an instant replay.

Crystal Castles -- again, pure beauty. The Nutcracker Suite for a soundtrack and some beautiful levels makes this the quintessential gobbler.
