VHS as a medium

Post by Flake »

For some reason or another, I've always loved VHS. I was watching an old video tape the other day (The Commitments) and got to thinking: A lot of outdated media are used long after the general public have lost interest in them (Beta, Cassette, Floppy, Microdisks) for one reason or another. Hell, this very board is a celebration of antiquated gadgets. But being that I know zilch about technology, I can't for the life of me think of a modern use for VHS other than nostalgia.

Is there still any practical task or application where VHS is the best option, from a technical stand point?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Well the big issues is, it doesn't offer anything over DVD.

. Worse Sound
. Worse Video
. Wear out
. Take up more space

People love things like Laser Disc because it offers things DVD doesnt (Better Fast Fowarding, slow motions, frame by frame, etc).

Collect what you want to collect, but it doesnt have advantages over DVD.

VHS has a certain look that's for sure. Its bad, but definitely nostalgic, so I hear what you're saying.

So vhs is not better than dvd from a technical standpoint. However there are a ton of movies out there that were only published on vhs.

VHS has a special place in my heart. Old classics should be watched the old classic way! ;)

By the way, what was that format called where you got the movie on a CD? I'm pretty sure it has some fancy name and not just "CD".

As other have said, tapes that were not released on any other format. VHS Research Documentaries and old movies from libraries come to mind.
