Virtual Boy Wario Land for...well, Virtual Boy Review

Post by ReddMcKnight »

So I recently acquired a Virtual Boy, and I gotta say, it's not as bad as everyone thinks. At least, that's what I think. Anyway, along with it, I also acquired VB Wario Land, which is quite fun. Here's why:

Gameplay: Platformer
This is a Platformer. You go to the left and right in 2D, jumping on top of enemies (or charging them, your choice), collecting items, and trying to get to the end of the level. As I just mentioned, Wario can charge at enemies or use different attacks depending on the hat he gets from busting item blocks. From what I have seen so far, there is the regular hat, which allows you to charge enemies, the bull horns hat, which does the same thing, except for a slightly longer time, which can also help you clear long jumps, and the dragon hat, which allows a dragon on top of your head (...WTF?) to breathe fire and burn enemies. Other than all that, you can also collect coins and treasure items, which, if this is the same as other Wario Games, alters the ending. Also, to beat a level, you need to find a key to open the door that lets you exit said level.

Story/Prologue (Taken from the game's manual):

"I, Wario, have an interesting story to tell. One day during my vacation
in the Awazon river basin, I landed my trusty seaplane, Bulldog, and decide
to relax in the shadow of the beautiful Aldegara Waterfall. While basking
in the sun, I spied some strange creatures with masks entering the
waterfall. This piqued my interest!

I hurried over and followed them into the waterfall. Behind the falls
there was a large cave, and in the back of the cave ... there was a vault
filled with a glorious mountain of treasure!!

Some of the masked creatures jumped me, but I quickly overcame them.
"This treasure is all mine now!", I thought to myself and rushed to collect
the loot. Suddenly, the floor collapsed and I fell!

I found myself deep within the Earth! I was quite angry and vowed revenge
on these creatures, "I will get their treasure!!!"

Treasure Hunting, while probably a tired concept in this day and age, is still fun if you ask me.

Music: ???

Heh Heh...I, uh...wasn't paying attention...Hey! This is a fun game! You probably won't notice it either!

Controls: Eh...

The controls are fairly good, but holding the Controller and using it for too long may hurt your wrists and/or hands. What kind of bugs me though is that you need to hold the Right Shoulder Button to run.

Graphics: Ummm...Ouch?

To be completely honest, this is where the game's weakness is. Don't get me wrong. The graphics are good looking and you can tell what's going on all the time, but they're red and black, which means you have to take a 15-20 Minute Break (or less depending on your eye strength) every 20 Minutes. Fortunately, you can adjust an option for the game to tell you when to rest.

Final Word: Your in for a fun time!

This is an excellent game, well worthy of being called a Nintendo Game. Just a shame it had to be on a system that most people don't like. If your looking for a platformer to play, or if your just bored, this is one game you should keep in mind.

Score: 8.2/10

I'll try to post a Review of my other VB Game, Vertical Force, later today.

I've always heard that Wario Land was it's best game. Sydlexia.com said Wario Land was its ONLY good game in fact.

Red Alarm is kinda fun if you can get past the wire frame graphics. Tennis is also cool. And believe it or not, Nester's funky bowling is a pretty good bowling game if you like it casual style. Mario Clash is a different spin on the old mario arcade game, multiple planes etc, but I agree with others, Warioland is one of the best if not the best game for the system. Waterworld while valuable, sucks horribly in my opinion. I thought it was an underrated system and could've done a lot more if people would have tried harder making games for it.

To be honest, I prefer Teleroboxer over Wario Land VB. It's essentially a 3D video game version of Rock em Sock em Robots, made by the dev. team behind the Punch-Out!! series.

Damn, if I still had a VB, I'd be reviewing some games right now too!

Wario Land was probably my favorite game on Virtual Boy and one of the few worth it on Virtual Boy. :)
