whats a good quality vinyl player
Got into Vinyl collecting recently, looking for good quality player and whats the do's and dont's of records and players thanks!
Re: whats a good quality vinyl player
I'm not an expert on vinyls, but I guess I can give you a few tips. Never stack your records horizontally, always vertically. Stacking them horizontally will cause them to warp.
How much are you looking to spend on a player? They can become super expensive if you go for a direct drive (oppose to a belt driven player).
This is what I got a year or two ago...

My turntable before that broke some years ago, and my vinyl collection was just sitting while I was "planning" on getting a new one. I just decided to get this one and not worry about super quality, it ended up being a good purchase. I have it hooked up to my receiver which powers my floor standings (12", 5", 4" - or something like that) and it sounds great.

I've heard this is a good turntable.

I have a shitty sony one (the same one as ziggy), but it does it's job. Right now I don't have the best amplifier and I have $5 thrift store speakers. I listen to my vinyl A LOT and would eventually like to invest in a better system.
The Audio Technica AT-PL120 runs for about $200 brand new. If you have a good system and you're not a DJ or anything, it's worth dropping the bones for it.

Technics
SL-1210M5GEB
Good performance but maybe too much
Depends on how much you want to spend and what you want it for.

I have an older Hitachi Linear Track a very nice LP sized to fit turntable. Sensor will pick up individual grooves, well sometimes. No USB in this model though.

The best investment, one that has a pre-amp combo and supports USB out, so you have an easy option to make MP3s and CD-Rs.
Note that a lot of current stereo systems don't have a Pre-Amp to support the older turntables.

If you go to your local record store, most of them sell turntables and equipment. Those guys know a heck of a lot about them and can usually point you in the right direction.
Don't forget... speakers are just about as important as the player. I have a decent player going through $5 thrift store speakers and I get mostly crap sound, but I don't have the cash to drop on something like Ks. It's decent for now.

Well mostly listening but I figure if you have any information that's relative to either mixing or listening, just post it because I'm finding it pretty interesting.Opa Opa wrote:For what? Mixing or just playing music?OldSchool_Boy wrote:Bump

technics 1200 mk2 is a solid table . the 1200 line has been in production since the 70's . only thing you have to worry about after you get a table is a headshell and cartridge ... I like the ortofon's .... i use the nightclub pro s... but that's because I mix records .
Those shells aren't very good for scratching (not weighted enough) .
Almost any decks will require a pre-amp ... but some home theater amps have pre-amps built in .
