it looks like a burnt cd and a fake case. the pictures on the TV are kind of convincing, but you cant see the CD-I anywhere in them and you could probably emulate the prototype to have it display on the TV.
It got me thinking, can you even burn cd-I games? i tried to find any info, but with no luck.
This is probably fake, but...(CD-I Super Mario Prototype)

It's either a pirate/bootleg game (like Sonic on SNES or Donkey Kong Country on Genesis) or it's a hack that some one made and this guy on eBay is trying to pass it off as a "prototype."
Since the CD-I came out in 91, I doubt it had any copy protection.

Yeah, it's real, and wasn't ever released, unfortunately. It was meant to be the main Mario game for the CD-i, instead of Hotel Mario. I've played a bit of it, and I think it's safe to say that even as a prototype, it's still better than Hotel Mario.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that CD-i fans (?) will jump on this one.

yeah I remember reading about it. It was never finished. And was supposed to suck.

Oh wow, I can't believe it's real! Still, it might easily be a copy.
edit: I was just reading that wiki page...

It's a shame this game was so far from completion because the screen shots look good.As it is a pre-alpha, the prototype is rather limited; Mario (in his "Super" form) can only walk both ways and jump, and no powerups exist. He cannot slide or swim, but it would appear that these abilities would have been implemented had development continued.[1] Enemies are also not programmed correctly; they disappear when Mario ends up above them, suggesting incomplete stomping attempts.[2] Enemies also cannot harm Mario, and are stopped in their tracks if touched, even if it means ending up floating in the air.

The 1up article I read a while ago said
Being that the CD-i was not designed to handle sprite-based games, especially those as complicated as Super Mario World, the team had quite a challenge ahead of them. This was a machine that did not tile sprites, had no hardware support for overlaying sprites on top of each other, experienced controller input delay with its wireless remote controller, and had only one CD audio channel, meaning a game could not play a sound effect at the same time as background music!
read the whole article... it makes the prospect of the game sound pretty bad.

Hmm... Must've said, "Wait guys! This game is not bad enough to be on the CD-i, we cant release it!"

I remember reading about this game's development, how they literally took photos of a TV while playing Super Mario World, and then cropped them down to just mario's animations, washed out the color a bit, crammed onto some prerendered backgrounds of exotic locations...
And it looks as bad as it sounds, haha.

...the pics looked better when they were thumbnail size.
