Thinking of setting up a game server...

Post by thetooth »

I recently bought new vps thats just been setup by my host and now that i have the http side all setup i was wondering if anyone would interested in using a few services if i set them up.

The idea is retro pc games for a reason, the server is a brand new HP proliant with 16cores of goodness but we are running in a virtual machine and only have 512mb dedicated ram(burstable to 1GB before paging) and it has to still be able to hold up the sites while the games are running... so its not going to be running crysis wars any time soon but pretty much any game made around 2005 will run perfectly.

Details:
20GB HDD
320GB/mo bandwidth
512MB ram
located at Virginia datacenter (VA-IDC4)

So heres were you come in, i have no idea what to put up, i've tried kaillera but there were issues with the UDP connection and peers being dropped for no reason(the app is almost 10years old remember). So what do you want to play? :P

If only the MAME team would acknowledge netplay and stop behaving like elitist pricks.

Fusion has its own netplay routine, but its not that robust. Also, I believe ZSnes offers the same function. All coinop emulators I know of only support Kaillera.

Both of those options are peer 2 peer so theres no need for a server anyway... from what i can find the kaillera server is not listening for incoming connections like other processes do, instead it just authenticates the first connect request and then go's back to sleep :/

Thanks, i heard of emulinker but didn't look into it, i'll test it out now.

Edit: well it seems theres something up with the firewall and not the software because the exact same thing is happening :/

I've set the incoming udp ports required but kaillera uses random ports around 5000 and not what it says in the readme...

L4D2 is resource intensive. I think thetooth is looking to start a server where we can hop in without buying anything. (emulation = free)

It would be really sweet to play random bouts of MK/KoF/SF2 etc.

You don't have to pay for the software to run a L4D server. I have a friend who runs a server from his house on a dedicated 2GHz 1GB machine. It runs fine for 4 people, we can't run versus comfortably on it (we get pings of over 300ms) but that is most likely due to him having domestic broadband with an upload bandwidth limit of 2.7mbps.

WORKS!

My host thought it was a good idea to include a loop back interface in the firewall by default so all udp traffic was being returned.

My ping is to bad to play on this (seeing as i live in australia >.>) but i've left it running for all. I'm going to bed now so let me know how it preforms... if it even works still.

server is 205.186.146.152, enjoy!

Edit: Offline at the moment as its leaking memory like crazy(stupid java)
