Saturn... great NON EA sports games

Post by alexkidd »

I am one of the rare gamers that is just as happy playing Panzer Dragoon Saga or Shining Force III as I am playing NFL 2K2. The Saturn seems to have some great original sports games in part to EA snubbing it (good riddence, their 32 bit games were mostly bad).

I'm wondering if there are any awesome sports titles I've missed out on though. Here are my favorites, anyone with any other please add them.

Decathalete
Winter Heat
Steap Slope Sliders
WorldWide Soccer '98 (any input on the various versions and imports of this, I know european games might have better club teams)
World Series Basebal II (also what version is best?)
Virtua Wrestling (the sega one with the VF2 guys and japanese wrestlers)
NHL Powerplay '96 by Virgin (how did Virgin beat Sega and EA?)

Anyone find a good golf or tennis game? Boxing?

For football is Madden '98 the best. In basketball is Sega's NBA Action any better than NBA LIVE by EA?

Greatest Nine '98 (I think this is just WSB98 with JAP teams - but one team is NiGHTS!) great, great baseball game

Firepro Wrestling: 6-Men Scramble - a SERIOUS wrestling game w/6-player ability - no button mashing fest here!

Funky Head Boxers - you asked for boxing, and I like this one

NBA Jam TE - 4-player I believe

These are all very good games. If you want a game that sucks, I recomment NFL '97. I figured it would be like an older version of NFL 2K - WRONG. More like NFL 2AWFUL4WORDS. It may not be the worst football on Saturnb, but it is bad. If you want 32-bit football, I'm afraid the PSX is the only way to fly (Blitz 2000 anyone?).

Definitely get either Greatest Nine '98 or Greatest Nine '98: Summer Action ... latter is still my favorite baseball game ... both are cheap.

I prefer Victory Goal '97 but any of the Worldwide Soccer '97-'98 stuff is good.

All the boxing games suck. The tennis games aren't much better but Tennis Arena is worth a look.

NBA Action '98 (Visual Concepts) is great. Exactly what sb650touring expected from NFL '97.

I think NHL All-Star Hockey '98 is a little better than Powerplay '96 (same engine, updated). More realistic though.

Hang on to World Series Baseball 2 for the 2D graphics and fast games.

The best golf game, IMO, is Virtual Golf (Scottish Open) by Core. 4 courses ... 3D ... fun ... colorful graphics ... fast rounds. The later T&E Soft imports aren't bad ... Jun Classic and Rope Country Club (something like that), Waialee 36 Holes. There's another US 3D game that's okay, but can't remember title.

Zap Snowboard Trix '98 is worth a look cheap ... slow at times, graphics pretty blocky, but not bad.

Slam'n Jam '96 isn't bad (not as good as NBA Jam: TE).

Hard to find but cheap when you do: J-League Go-Go-Goal! and World League Soccer '98. J-League plays like an updated Victory Goal ... straight arcade conversion. WLS '98 is HARD but has a lot of options ... a better FIFA '98.

The third version of the SeaBass Fishing games (can't remember title) is pretty good. Or Fishing Koshien 2. Minnesota Fats Pool isn't too bad either. I think that's about it ... :)

I've seen Summer Action mentioned before, but I'd like to know how it was different than Greatest Nine '98.

And Funky Head Boxers doesn't suck! Well, maybe it does and I'm just giving it lots of credit for weirdness. But it is worth checking out!
