ERRONEOUS ENDS!

Post by AwesomeMonstar »

So, as I forray into the end of Cave Story, getting the jetpack and the bad ending AGAIN, I began to think of why I always go for the perfect ending. Aside from the extra game play that usually it usually entails and the completionist nature I have fostered over the years, all I normally get is a happier end to the story. I usually just youtube the other endings once I beat it so, that really doesn't matter all that much to me anyways.

That got me to thinking, which games has a stronger ending with it's bad or less happy ending? I'll use Mass Effect 2 as an example, so SPOILER ALERT for all those who don't want to know.

Basically, if you make a whole load of wrong choices and don't gain the loyalty of your squad, the game will just start offing folks left and right, sometimes even at random. After the final battle with the boss, Sheppard's platform is flung to the ground, killing your two comrades. Alone, sheppard makes a mad dash for ship, but in a dramatic leap to the entrance platform, he falls short, plummeting to a certain death. The only survivor of all the events, Joker, phones in the illusive man on an empty ship, briefs him, and we prepare for the biggest fight in the universe, with both our hand empty. I wouldn't say its the best ending in the game, a middle ground being the best, but having Shepard and others die leave a huge emotional impact and leaves us in disbelief, not only of what just happened, but for our chances in the oncoming war. Everythings gone to hell, how can you pick up the pieces. Here's a link for a general idea.

/SPOILER

So, what other type of games do you think pull off the bad end well? What works better with a d enging than an S? Spoiler tags are definetly gonna be needed here...
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

Dead Rising's best ending sucks

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Everyone dies! I actually like the alternate ending where Brad and Jessica get on the helicopter and survive. I think that doctor does too

I actually like Disgaea's bad ending where...

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Laharl gives in to his dark side and takes over earth rather than giving in to the obnoxious "love freak" bimbo

Now Max Payne 2 on the other hand, the bad ending is very sad. Good ending is much more satisfying

I just have to say, the normal ending to Disgaea is really depressing, especially if you don't stick around after the credits to see everything, and even then, it doesn't soften the blow. Basically, Laharl dies, and the game just stops. It really pissed me off to see how much better the good ending was compared to this one, too!

Mass Effect 2 is quite interesting with its meticulous scripting for the ending. Reminds me of the game Blade Runner with its various endings that change according to your decisions within the game. Hopefully more game designers will start treating endings as a serious plot element and not just a careless afterthought.

I have too many games to actually get to their endings, and especially not multiple ones. :?

Cybernator had alternate endings and I always preferred the bad ending. It was more tragic and had cool anime stills.

I like how Chrono Trigger's game overs during battles with Lavos weren't just game overs; you got to see him destroy the world.
