Sega Master System on the Way

Post by shwisha »

I ordered a complete boxed sega master system and these games;

Populous
Robocop vs The Terminator
Gain Ground
Dragon the Bruce Lee Story
Indiana Jones the Last Crusade
Super Tennis
California Games
Great Basketball
Alien Syndrom
Shinobi
Monopoly
Afterburner
Fantasy Zone
Hang On
Safari Hunt
Transbot
F-16 Fighting Falcon
Teddy Boy
World Grand Prix
Black Belt
Time Soldiers
Rambo III
Choplifter
Out Run
Rescue Mission
Rocky
Space Harrier

I've just got into retro game collecting a few months ago and also have; NES, SENES, GENESIS and Atari collections but I'm far more excited about this one than the others. There's something about the Sega Master System that is so interesting to me. Maybe it's because it's something I never got to experience. It's like going back in time and playing a system I barely knew existed.

Got any recommendations for games I should get next or any hardware or anything? (hoping to find a pair of those 3d glasses sometime)

For SMS games check out Zillion, Golvellius, and Miracle Warriors (the last two only if you like rpgs). One think I like about Zillion is that you need pen and paper to write down a lot of codes to help you beat the game. There's just something old school about having to do work outside of just playing the game in order to beat it.

For the next hardware you check out, look into a Turbografx 16. The way you describe the Master System is how I'd describe Turbografx. If you get into the cd stuff it can get pricey though.

Also, the 3d glasses are worth it.

That's a great lot of games you have coming. I really like the light gun games on the SMS. Gangster Town and Wanted! are two you're not getting that I'd recommend. R-type on the SMS is second only to the TG-16 version. If you can come by a copy, Phantasy Star is an absolute classic. I've also heard good things about Golden Axe Warrior, but I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet.

I wouldn't worry too much about what to get next just yet. You'll have your hands full with that lot of games for a while.

Thanks for the feedback the good thing is all of the games include the cases. It's amazing to me how it's easier to find Sega Master System games still in their cases than it is to find Sega Genesis games in cases.

Hitting up my local thrift store today, hope I get lucky and find some more cheap SMS games.

For the complete system (2 controllers + phaser) plus the 25 games I'm looking at around $125 in damage.

I'll second Kenseiden and R-Type and Wonder Boy in Monster Land. I have an SMS, but those three games are really the only ones I played that I really thought were great.

Oh yeah, and there's Dragon Crystal if you want to try a fun, simple rogue-like.

Also, I'm not personally a huge fan of Golden Axe Warrior.

In addition to what's already been mentioned:

Must-haves:

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Asterix
Dynamite Dux
Ninja Gaiden
Power Strike 1-2
Rambo First Blood Part II (called Secret Command in Europe)
Rastan
Sonic the Hedgehog 1-2 (and maybe Sonic Chaos)
Spellcaster

I assume these two are must-haves but I've only played them briefly:

Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
Deep Duck Trouble starring Donald Duck

Little known and not for everyone:

Alien 3
Astro Warrior
Captain Silver
Cloud Master
Cyborg Hunter
Danan: The Jungle Fighter
Jurassic Park
Kung Fu Kid
Lord of the Sword
Masters of Combat (Brazil only, rare)
Psychic World
Ultima IV
Ys: The Vanished Omens

Superior ports:

Bubble Bobble
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Enduro Racer (Japanese version has 5 more levels)
Rampage
Renegade

I completed Gangster Town the other day. Awesome lightgun game. The only other one I have is Operation Wolf, which I'm enjoying more the more I play it.
