So after years of living away from all my buds and moving and really just not having anyone to chill with a play videogames with, let alone a serious RPG, I think I'm going to turn to the dark side and try my first MMO.
I've shunned them all so far. Never even tried a WOW demo. Skipped FF11 even though I'm an FF nut. I think FF14 is gonna make me cave though.
Acutally no - it's not the game, it's the situation I'm in. Basically I'm hoping being a part of an MMO community will take the place of hanging out with some guys/girls while we all play our own RPG in the same room. I'm looking to re-create the old fun in a new way.
I'm not gonna have tons of time to put into it either. 10 hours a week max. I know those people who play MMO's right now are probably laughing. I think I'll be satisfied with that though as I doubt I could squeeze any more time then that.
Sound like a bad idea? I mean MMO's are evil right?

Re: I'm turning to the dark side - I'm talking MMOs
I have played a few MMO games like WoW and Final Fantasy XI and had fun with them but I switch games to often to stay focused on one game. However, it may change with Final Fantasy XIV when that releases looking forward to it!!

Might be worth a try because of the emphasis put on roleplay. Also it's free

Which MMO are you gonna be playing?

You should try out Dungeon Fighter Online if you haven't already. It's free but there is a cash shop, mostly for clothing items. This game looks and plays similar to Bare Knuckle & Final Fight but has fighting game and RPG elements. Since it's originally from Korea, there is a daily limit on how much you can play (ends up being about 3 hours on average). If you don't want to become addicted and feel compelled to spend all your time on MMOs, this would be a good choice for you.
One last thing I wanna say is that DFO is the very best game I have ever played in my life.

Honestly, out of what's released right now I'd recommend WoW. One thing I consistently saw was that each new MMO would get some people to leave WoW, but they all always came back. Blizzard has polished that to a high mirror shine. Getting to max level can be done in a reasonable amount of time and you're always seeing new stuff in the process.
Once you hit max level is when you'll have a make or break moment. Some people enjoy doing random groups of high level dungeons and that'll keep them occupied for a long time. Others are completionists who reputation grind, and that consumes them. And then there's people like me, who need to have a good group of people to keep you coming back doing the same thing (and that's what happens at the top, it all gets samey). I played that game all through college, but after I graduated my guild fell apart and I couldn't find another group that I meshed as well with. That was what finally got me to quit. Now I've got my eye on Bioware's MMO.
It sounds like you wouldn't be able to get into raiding, at least at this point in your life, but you can definitely do all the other stuff. Give it a try, but remember that you won't really be able to find a regular group of people until you hit max level.

Re: I'm turning to the dark side - I'm talking MMOs
Hey, I've played lots of MMOs over the years and had some serious fun with them. But I find the key, once things begin feeling too repetitive, is to do something outrageous. For instance, I used to play Asheron's Call. One Halloween, monster masks were introduced. I managed to get one, then dressed my character in clothes similar to one of the monsters and declared myself a super hero. People remembered me several years later when my brother went back to the game.
It's things like that that make it worth it.

Before you go any further. Track down and watch Second Skin. Here's the trailer, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPOxuOCGi9I

both let you stick things in them for amusement...
both usually end up costing you a fortune over time...

Sounds like a recipe for addiction to me. If your only social outlet is the MMO, it's going to be very reinforcing. I'd liken it to trying to recreate the fun you had with your college drinking buddies by getting drunk at home alone in the dark.Acutally no - it's not the game, it's the situation I'm in. Nice analogy. I would recommend finding some new friends who play games in your area if you think there is a chance you could become addicted to videogames... and since you're on racketboy, you're probably addicted to videogames.Hatta wrote: Sounds like a recipe for addiction to me.
