Problem with Model I Genesis

Post by sharp3D »

Heyo guys... Quick backstory:

A few weeks ago, I was at a newly discovered retro game store here in Orlando and they were selling a complete boxed model I Genesis for $50!!! I bought it on the spot. I also bought a bunch of random games. The stores owner tested out and cleaned all the games I was buying and assured me the system worked so we didn't test it. The system isn't in the best condition, I would give it a 6.5 outta 10, but for $50 who cares. I decided to take it out for the first time since getting it home and cleaning her up a bit and playing a few games.

Anyway, it powers on but I get no video our audio via composite. When I tried using the RF cable I get the license screen then it just goes to black. Its not the game, I made sure it worked on my CDX. I took the system completely apart and cleaned it. All the capacitors look good and I couldn't see anything that looks like it could be causing the issue, though I am nowhere near an expert. I put it all back together, but its the same story.

Whats the deal? :)

I don't see how $50 dollars is such a great deal, but, try to get a can of compressed air and spray it into the cartridge slot of the Genesis.

And make sure the contacts on the games are SPOTLESS!

Yeah, it's either the contacts on your games or the contacts on the cartridge port itself giving you the problem.

Also, make sure you have your TV tuned to the correct channel that the switch on the back of your system is set to.

It's the complete box, everything even plastic inside for $50... model 1 consoles only, are going on average $25-30 and I couldn't find a complete package to get a price estimate. So still sounds like a good deal to me especially since there really isnt too many places to pickup retro games around here.

I did clean the cartridge slot and spray everything with compressed air.

I must not have been clear before... I tested a few games on one of my other genesis' and they worked fine. When plugged into this genesis I get NO sound or video via composite and when using the RF adapter(on the correct channel) I get the license screen then just black.

Hmm in that case I dunno what could be wrong with it. Maybe you should take some pics of the motherboard and post them up in the Technical Help section?
