Does anyone here own either a 64DD or Famicom Disk Drive?

Basically, I'm writing an article on console add-ons and whether they've been a success or a failure. I thought it would be a good idea to get some viewpoints from people that actually own such machines. So yeah, if anyone owns one of these 2 add-ons in particular and wants to put forward their view, it would be very welcome

I'm not sure yet, but I might also be including the Sega 32X/ Mega CD, which I'd assume a lot more people here own.

I owned a Famicom Disk Drive at one point but couldn't get the damned thing to work, so I returned it and decided to never buy one again. From what I have heard from many different people is that the Famicom Disk Drives aren't worth the trouble. It's probably the most poorly made video game system of all time. There are so many things that can go wrong with it and it's hard to locate the problem source. Even if everything is perfect, the unusual size of the disk drive rubber belt will be sure to go bad on you after a few years. Thankfully I don't think I'm missing much. Many of the FDD exclusive games made it onto cartridge later, or released on Game Boy Advance.

Send him a PM, although he may not have any games for it as they are pretty rare. It's worth a shot. Not sure on the FDS.

thanks for the replies so far, guys. It's only for uni at the moment. I'm doing 2 feature pieces in the style of a magazine article. The other is comparing new entries in classic franchises with the classic versions. For example, Sonic with Sonic 4, Mega Man 2 with Mega Man 10, or the new version of A Boy and his Blob with the old.
I've had things published on the net before, so I might submit these, but at the moment they're just for an assignment.

I've owned a fully functional Famicom Disk System before and later sold it, I think on this site. Overall, it was definitely a successful system. Basically, it added save features at a time when Famicom cartridges just were not offering it (I think due to the higher cost at the time). Lots of classic franchises started out on the FDS like Zelda and Metroid. Also Super Mario Bros. 2 started here; both the original "Lost Levels" and the more familiar version that was a conversion from Doki Doki Panic. It eventually became redundant after cartridges started offering save features and, due to it often needed repairs due to aging parts, is really more of a novelty than anything else. Most of the top games for it, as has been mentioned, eventually made their way to cartridge form on the Famicom, NES and GBA. Lots of the games are also on the VC. I don't consider the FDS to be an essential add-on for collectors at all, where the Sega CD and especially the Turbografx CD definitely are.

Sure - I think I've finalised the add-ons which I'm focusing on as:

- 64DD
- N64 Expansion Pak
- Famicom Disk System
- Wii Motion Plus
- Sega 32X/ CD

I'd love to feature more, but space constraints won't allow it. I only have 4000 words to work with, and I already used up 2,500 with my other feature on new iterations of classic games.

Anyway, thanks Gooseberry, it would definitely be interesting to see what you have to say about the 32X, especially as it seems to get so much flak from everyone!
