Recently I played through Contra ReBirth and Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth, and had so much fun with them that I decided to try Konami's other ReBirth title on WiiWare, Gradius ReBirth. Before now, my only experience with Gradius was with the original title on the NES. I had never beat that game, but I did have lots of fun with it in the past.
I played to the second boss on Gradius ReBirth and picked up a ton of power-ups today before finally dying, and needless to say, it was hard to pick back up again from scratch at that point. Since you start over at a checkpoint without any of your power-ups, it kind of screws you depending on what checkpoint you start at. I could never really recover from where I was without a few power ups and gave up for the time being due to frustration.
I do like that this game feels a lot like the original Gradius. I've read some reviews that criticize it for this, but in my opinion it makes the game more fun for people like me who go nuts over bits of nostalgia like the ReBirth games.
I think I'm going to try to play through it tomorrow, possibly at a lower difficulty setting at first so that I can get used to the gameplay. Has anyone here played through this game?
Some quick thoughts on Gradius ReBirth
Re: Some quick thoughts on Gradius ReBirth
I have it, picked it up for some insperation.
Its really nice and polished, like you dying at a boss really pisses me off (unless are playing it easier in which you generally get 5-10 power ups in one hit) the game is actually really small (5 stages) but you if you play it on anything other than easy, fuck me 5 stages seems like an entire lifetime.
I have only finished it on easy.
What control method do you use when playing out of interest?
Also, I like you have all 3 ReBirth games, and I must say Castlevania Adventure (Even more if you compare to the GB original) is by far the pick of the litter, but I cant wait to see if anything else comes out.

Re: Some quick thoughts on Gradius ReBirth
I used the Wiimote held sideways, as I don't have a classic controller yet, and didn't think to use the Wavebird for whatever reason. As far as the weapon layout goes, I used the second one down on the list.
Re: Some quick thoughts on Gradius ReBirth
For some reason I much prefer the Nunchuck control scheme, didnt think I would. Plug a nunchuck in and give it a try, it seems less 'sticky' to me.
Re: Some quick thoughts on Gradius ReBirth
Hopefully another Castlevania game, like the second one on the Gameboy.emwearz wrote:but I cant wait to see if anything else comes out
Re: Some quick thoughts on Gradius ReBirth
I've been wanting to get the ReBirth games, but I don't have a Wii Classic Controller (or anything similar). Good to see that people have good things to say about them.

I played all three of them with the Wiimote held sideways and can totally vouch for it!GSZX1337 wrote:I've been wanting to get the ReBirth games, but I don't have a Wii Classic Controller (or anything similar). Good to see that people have good things to say about them.

After gritting my teeth and playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii with the Wii-Mote, I'm not going to play another game with the sideways Wii-Mote unless I have to.jfe2 wrote:I played all three of them with the Wiimote held sideways and can totally vouch for it!GSZX1337 wrote:I've been wanting to get the ReBirth games, but I don't have a Wii Classic Controller (or anything similar). It sucks that Castlevania ReBirth doesn't have the controls of *Super Castlevania IV.
*I read that from one of the posters (Ziggy?) here.

Re: Some quick thoughts on Gradius ReBirth
Other than Gradius (Which I prefer the Nunchuck) I have too, the Wiimote has one of the best D-pads ever, really tight and responsive.jfe2 wrote:I played all three of them with the Wiimote held sideways and can totally vouch for it!GSZX1337 wrote:I've been wanting to get the ReBirth games, but I don't have a Wii Classic Controller (or anything similar). Re: Some quick thoughts on Gradius ReBirth
The controls still aren't bad though. For whatever reason, they actually feel best when fighting bosses. Everything just feels very precise, like any hit you take is your fault and not because of bad controls.GSZX1337 wrote:After gritting my teeth and playing New Super Mario Bros. Also, I think that Contra ReBirth requires the Wiimote, but don't quote me on that.
