Buy one like this one (Not from this shop though, it's too far away!). It's very solid and I recommend it, this model is good.

They are cheap (20 euro or so) and you can play ten footers or higher on them. Flat ones suck so don't waste a penny on them.
Remember, one tip: Place a carpet between the floor and the mat so as to prevent it from moving.
Hope that helps.

What program are you using? If its USB game controller compatible
then all you need is a PS2 USB adaptor and a PS1-PS2 Dance Pad.

Might I recommend BuyNShop.com? I've purchased many pads from there over the last few years (for myself and friends) and they have never failed on me. As an avid DDRer, I can't recommend these pads enough:

Be VERY careful when it comes to adaptors. Check Stepmania.com or other forums to check if they allow Up and Down at the same time because a good deal of those adaptors don't allow it and will ruin the game.

Re: DDR Mat for stepmania
Ill second BuyNShop. I bought two of their fushion pads:

Three years ago. They have had moderate use since then (recently they have been brought out at the church more than anything. And they still work quite well.
USB, PS2, and Xbox plugs make it a snap to use on anything aswell.

I have a DDR game metal DDR pad, but any of them with a usb connection is easier than using a PS2 to usb adapter.

i have a wooden hard pad. believe it or not it works nicely. not sure i would recomend it but one thing for sure is if your playing stepmania get a hard pad. it's sometimes hard to translate your softpad skills to the arcade.

I mounted mine on some wood too. Topped it of with clear vinyl floor (not carpet) runner material. A wood frame keeps vinyl/DDR Pad from sliding.

that's an interesting idea. but i bought mine and looks like a metal pad until you lift it and see where the wood is exposed. it works nicely but im not sure how long it would last.
