Asteroids record broken after 58 hours of play.

Post by DaGamingMonkey »

Sorry if previously posted, this is just insane.

"After a grueling 58 hours of continuous play, John McAllister of Seattle, Washington officially became the best Asteroids player on the planet by scoring an unthinkable 41,338,740 points in the classic 1979 coin-op arcade game. The previous mark of 41,336,440 was set by Scott Safran back in 1982 -- the longest standing record in gaming -- and was considered virtually unbreakable."

I love this game but I could never imagine being that good. Even if I was I could never imagine playing for that long. Insanity.

The time you have to stay awake / stay focused is utterly insane, its one thing to be good enough at the game to get a score that high, but its a completely different thing to have to endurance to pull it off.

Top effort.

Methamphetamine? I want people who break Twin Galaxies high scores that take long periods to be subjected to testing for "performance enhancing" drugs.

I agree, hard to imagine it being legit without some form of stimulant. Caffeine can only take you so far. I'm sure Adderall could make this very possible.

Jesus, I thought playing one game of Crazy Taxi for a couple of hours to get 48k was gruelling, this is insane. Asteroids is lot more sedate than CT though...

I'll bet this'll guarantee him a cameo spot on that Asteroids movie coming up.

I don't want to take anything away from this guy's accomplishment, but the old Asteroids record was kind of mythic, having been unequaled in so many years and Scott Safran tragically dying several years later.

I feel like I did when Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron's home run record. Leaving out the issue of PED's entirely, I was more sad that an epic record set by a childhood hero was surpassed by a classless meathead. Not to infer that John McAllister was doped up or of Barry Bond's dubious character, it's just an analogy.

And slightly on and yet off topic i'm curious what Twin Galaxies criteria for drug testing is in this instance. What was the method, what was tested for, and who handles the results? If your allowed caffeinated beverages, does that include popping No-Doz? What about prescription amphetamines? Not that it's outside the realm of possibility for someone to stay awake and relatively focused that long, but with so many stimulants available between the pharmacy and street corner you have to wonder how far one would go to break this record.

Anyways, congratulations John McAllister, for staying awake long enough and maintaining enough lucidity and motor skills to score a record 41,336,440 points in Asteroids.

Yeah, it is my understanding that you just practice and become good at the game(no shit, huh?) and that is the easy part. The game does not continue to get harder and harder, it plateaus and then these feats are a matter of endurance and focus and not a matter of being the best Asteroids player to ever live. Of course that is easy for me to say sitting here with no world record or ever having even tried.

When I made my first post for some reason I thought that it had taken the dude 5 days, not 2 and a half. Still a long time to stay awake on your own but when I was thinking 5 days I was like, don't you start hallucinating after like 3 days?
