Do You Leave Your PC Running 24/7?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Do You Leave Your PC Running 24/7?

Post by racketboy »

The last couple years I have been running my PC 24/7, but I've been kinda toying with the idea of turning the machine off while I'm at work or sleeping.
I usually have a lot of stuff open, so I think that's my biggest hindrance. But I'm thinking it might discipline me more if I have to finish up things and close everything up.

What do you do?

My PC is going on nine years old believe it or not (knock on wood). I used to turn it on and off all of the time until the last couple of years. It has been running 27/7 since I upgraded to XP in 2002. It still runs quiet and the only thing that has failed on me was the video card. I will not upgrade to Vista since I think it is a waste at this point in time plus my machine could not handle it anyway. By the time this computer craps out I'll get a new PC with Vista preloaded on it and the bugs worked out. I think it is better to leave the PC running since it is less wear and tear on the components from what I hear, although it boils down to personal preference.
The capacitors are starting to fail (swollen cap syndrome) on my MOBO as this was a big problem with mostly all PC's built in the late 90's so I'm sure if I keep turning it on and off it will die a quicker death with the constant expansion from the heating/cooling cycle.

Since I serve my website and ftp off my mac mini, I leave it on all the time, except for occasional reboots for software updates.

I usually turn it off for the night unless bit-torrent is on (which will probably be on for the next few months...).

Have you ever considered hiberation mode racketboy? It is basically turning it off, but everything is as you left it when you turn it back on.

I leave mine on when it works. I've been using my laptop mostly at the moment until I get time to fix my main PC.

My shit is on 24/7

I wouldn't have it any other way. The hum of the fans is what puts me to sleep at night!

I only leave mine on overnight if I'm downloading something. I paid good money to build my system and I want to make it last as long as possible. No reason to have it on when I won't be needing it on.

I can't, it'll make it get all slowed down after the 3rd day. A bottleneck or Ram issue no doubt, damn pre-builts.
