Fantastic Mr. Fox Review

The movie had some really quirky, cute parts in it. Sometimes it was amusingly random. At other times it was self-deprecating and silly. Other times it was really quite clever and well thought out and made me laugh. On several occasions I warmed up to the characters and wanted to see how they developed, namely with the weird adversarial relationship between Christophson and Mr. Fox's son.

The there were weird awkward parts where the movie became dead serious and I wasn't sure how to react. The cold conversations between Mr. Fox and his wife stood out in this regard. Occasionally the movie just seemed to drag on, like the parts where Mr. Fox gave his pretentious speeches praising the merits of how “we're all just wild animals in the end.” I really just kind of sat in my chair and waited for those parts to end.

On the whole, though, the movie's good parts outweighed the weak parts for me. It's really quite an odd, endearing film. The fact that it's not a Pixar or Disney ripoff makes it seem a little special as well... I feel as though the film earns merit against its shortcomings just for being kinda different from everything out there.

Random complaint: Roald Dahl was an English author. So, I expected the characters in this movie to speak with English accents. For some weird reason the animals speak with American accents and the humans use English accents. The main fox in particular, voiced by George Clooney, has this unlikeable American quality that's similar to Rocky the Rooster from Chicken Run. It wasn't a show stopper, but I wonder if the producers got it in their heads that Americans would be unable to relate to characters that didn't speak with their own accent. Like I said earlier, it's not a show stopper, but it's kind of unnerving to me.

I didn't infer any sexy times from the movie, but at the start it did look kinda like a really high budget episode of Robot Chicken.

According to IMDb, the setting is deliberately ambiguous.

Wes Anderson is a filmmaker whose works people seem to either absolutely adore or utterly despise. I count myself among the former.

I really enjoyed the film.
My only complaint is that all of Wes Anderson's films seem to be the same plot with different characters and settings. The Tan Aquatic and The Royal Tenenbaums were good movies and I liked them, but you can't deny their similarities. Although the director obviously realizes this, it seems like he should change the formula. Haha, all the while I'm saying how I like all his films despite their shared themes. So I guess I'm just rambling...

I have yet to enjoy a Wes Anderson film. I thought Fantastic Fox might be the first, but it ended up disappointing me. I'm obviously not the only one who thinks this either considering only three (and only because Fantastic Mr. Fox finally broke past production costs very recently), out of six of his movies have ever made a profit. Truthfully I don't see why he keeps getting hired, but obviously someone out there likes him (a 50% profit chance does not seem like a good chance to take when there are many other directors with much better rates of profit making films).
