Question about Dreamcast cases...

Post by Cdr Chaos »

(First time poster, dont' yell at me if someone asked this before, I couldn't find a post about it)

I was looking at Dreamcast games online to add to my collection and I noticed some were different colors. For instance Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi have white labling on the side, while Sonic Adventure 2, PSO and Dino Crisis have black lables. Also, the Smash Pack has a grey one. Is this just an aesthetic choice by the developers or is there a reason some cases have different coloring, like a first edition or something like that?

SEGA just decided to change the colors for some reason. I don't think there's any significance to it, unlike the Player's Choice/Greatest Hits games which had a different color because they're greatest hits games. The change happened around the same time they released the black Dreamcast system. It was just a cosmetic change, no significance. It's the same as how Sony rebranded new PS3 games with new design.

I remember reading a mailbag in a game magazine around 10 years ago (gamepro maybe?) and some asked this, the reply was that white cases signified generation 1 and black was generation 2. So maybe if the system lasted longer they would have changed the cases on a yearly basis. I preferred white cases myself, always thought they looked cooler.

Huh, interesting. I'll have to look at my DC collection and see if the earlier games are all in white. The most obvious examples that comes to mind--Sonic Adventure is white, while Sonic Adventure 2 is black; launch titles all seem to be white--backs up that explanation.

I prefer white also. It suits Dreamcast's "white" motif and sets it apart from the black PSX game discs.

It's just like the red Genesis labels that we started getting from a certain point on during the console's life cycle.

I like the Genesis labels with the original black and grey grid.
