Any good way to upgrade relatively old PSP custom firmware?

Post by Ivo »

From what I can find on the web so far it seems to need to be done in steps (for reference the one I would have to update is still in 3.90 M33-3) - e.g. upgrade first to a 4.xx then finally to a 5.xx. I imagined there would be a way to just put the latest one in it as long as it is custom firmware (the idea would be that it could run homebrew anyway, so just run the installer of the latest one). But clearly I might be wrong as the installers seem to come with requirements of version more recent than something.

Just find original firmware 5.03 and flash to that. Then use Pandora or ChickHEN and Rain's Magic Memory Stick to put 5.0 M33-6 on it. That's what I have. I haven't tried the GEN-D version yet.

If you don't have a Pandora battery, I recommend buying one from dealextreme.com. It's good insurance.

dude, I don't remember because it was too long ago now that I messed with PSP. But in case you haven't checked here: psp-hacks.com -- that was always my primary source of info.

Isn't it relatively easy to upgrade the firmware? Don't you just have to put the update patch on your stick and then flash it? So what if you have to go to v4 then v5.

Yes, that's correct but there's no need to go to v4 and then v5. Just go directly to v5 but not v5.5 or v6.2.

If you do a google search, there are some sites where you can download the original firmware. Here's one link: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1645

I was in fact wondering if going to the OFW 5.03 and then running the HEN would be better than going through an intermediate CFW version. I guess it is pretty much equivalent, only finding OFW 5.03 may be easier than finding CFW 4.whatever.

Thanks for the comments guys - 2 easy steps isn't a big deal anyway. I was just curious why the scene doesn't have some kind of installer that just works regardless of what CFW you have, but I'm guessing there are good reason for that, and that they are just rather technical for people outside the scene to care about.

I would just totally reflash the thing with Rain's MMS Maker 5.00 M33-4 and a DealExtreme Pandora battery for $6. Most installers freeze halfway through in my experience, but Rain's nails it every time.

I'd rather avoid getting the Pandora to update the firmware on this Slim - it will take a while to get here (DX is cheap but it does take a while).

This is fine. Just upgrade to 5.03 and then use the ChickHEN hack to run the Rain's installer.
I would still order the Pandora battery. It's nice to have insurance.

Yep, I'll just do this.
(as described in PSP Hacks)

Seems the best way, as I don't know if I just did through CFW to CFW I might need to go through more than one intermediate step. Through 5.03 I just need to go straight to 5.03 and then ChickHEN.

It's rather funny (to me at least) that this exploit is run through *image* viewing.
