Re: Complete N64 wiring diagram to make into a portable
Thanks for this.
Years ago, I was experimenting with hooking an SNES (model 1) up to a PSOne LCD in RGB mode.
The video quality in RGB was brilliant.
I highly recommend using RGB if you can get a hold of one of these screens. It makes me cringe when I see someone hooking this screen up in composite when making a portable (in which the system can output RGB).
For those who don't know; even the N64 can be modded to output RGB.
I haven't made my own portable console just yet, but this is mainly due to currently being unemployed (lack of funds), lack of time from trying to find a job, and working on small contract jobs. I definitely have the electronic experience, and the desire to complete one someday, though.
I appreciate the diagram, and have bookmarked this page.
It will surely save me some time from having to retrace the circuits
/ look for information that is spread throughout various places on the net.

You can RGB mod with PAL if your console is Australian or French, but not other PAL regions - Nintendo removed the components from the chip from other PAL regions, like the UK. NTSC is fine of course, you can do RGB; for the rest of us, its composite or S-video.

What's nice about this diagram is it shows where things are on the board. I remember seeing a similar diagram on the BenHeck boards but it was a paint mockup, so it was hard to follow.

Yeah, when I started portable making I studied the diagram you referred to, didn't find it overly easy to follow until I knew later more about things, by then didn't need the diagram anyway!
Made this one as easy to follow (hopefully) as I could.

WHAT? Really? Is that true? That is just totally bizarre... Why would my PAL SNES support full RGB and the N64 not?!

All part of Nintendo's plan to punish you for being in Europe.Niode wrote:bacteria wrote:You can RGB mod with PAL if your console is Australian or French, but not other PAL regions - Nintendo removed the components from the chip from other PAL regions, like the UK. Re: Complete N64 wiring diagram to make into a portable
If the story I remember is correct, Nintendo disabled the PAL chip from RGB (it contains green but not red or blue as I recall) as their cables didn't sell enough on the SNES; probably saved a few cents. Strange though that they didn't disable French or Australian ones too.
Regards RGB on SNES, I remember a year or so ago I output RGB via my PAL SNES and the results I thought were actually slightly worse, and darker, than composite - although was only testing on a PSone screen at the time. I'll revisit the option again when i'm working on the SNES again (making it region free, and about 1/2 sized).

I think this needs a 56K warning, not like anyone uses it anymore, but I didn't expect that ginormous image.
