o.k i have these 2 sega genesis model 1 and they are both the high definition model's but if you take a closer look at the "sega genesis" logo one has a "TM" and the other has a"R".
the one with the "R" is the one that does not have the "TMSS" and has good sound,and the other with the"TM" has good sound but has the "TMSS" start up. any differences between the 2 other than that? i never seen this before? here are some pics:

Interesting though that the ®/™ might be a way to tell the versions apart further. Maybe someone who is on Sega-16 could tell that guy and he can update the thread. Which one is the non TMSS one?
My HD non TMSS does not have ® or ™ on it, but the box and instructions have ®.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.
