Infinite Space

Well this game is supposedly out somewhere, to zero fanfare if I might add. IGN Australia gave it 7/10 as it seems the reviewer is accustomed to the creature comforts of the likes of ME2. I doubt he ever tried anything like Elite or Battlecruiser.

For those that dont know it is a multiplayer DS rpg based around spaceships and exploration. To me it sounds alot like shipcombat from Skies of Arcadia. I am interested but wont be picking it up for a while, unless I have a friend or two that are picking it up.

Are you picking up? It just came out yesterday here. It looks very interesting I heard it is a tactical rpg. I will wait before I pick it up just to see other's impressions first. I also saw Fragile Dreams came out yesterday which also has got my attention.

My copy arrives tomorrow, but I have no idea when I'll get around to playing it. I've heard nothing but good things, aside from the possibility that it's complex, which is a good thing in my opinion.

Here's my review of the game based on the two hours I've spent playing today:

Awesome game, great production values, a little polish wouldn't have hurt.

The concept is solid and you really do get to take command of a ship, assigning people to such specific tasks as 'Doctors Assistant' or 'Head Chef' once you install the correct components in you vessel.

But the audio is kind of improperly mixed and it has that typical Sega 'could you have allowed us more access to configuration menus?' feeling.

I'd give it a solid B+. Hopefully the next 20 hours are as fun as these first two have been.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

This is on my list once I finish the other DS games I have lined up. It sounds a lot like Skies of Arcadia in Space. Which is a good thing IMO.

So now that I've finished my first run of Strange Journey I'm now 10 hours into this game. I've really been enjoying it so far; while there really isn't exploration like you have in Star Control 2 it's still fun to go through all the planets of a new sector to hit up all the shops and talk with the locals. The combat is also interesting; it has those long monologs before shots are fired, giving you a sense of scale, but it can all be skipped, which is a great feature. You also can do cargo running which is really streamlined; if you have holds on the ship then it gives you money when you land at a port which is based directly on the distance you've travelled since the last port. I did that for a bit in Chapter 3 to pay for getting a pimped out fleet.

You start with one ship in chapter 1, get a second in chapter 2, and a third in chapter 3. I'm now in chapter 5 and still have a three ship fleet, but that'll expand up to 5 at some point. What's nice is that if you lose a ship it doesn't seem to cost much to get it repaired, if at all; you just have to land at a planet. That isn't always trivial, however. The ship customization is also fun, as you have to figure out which modules you want for each ship, and whether you want to focus it on pure combat ability or dial that back to be able to add in the ancillary modules.

There's only two complaints I have. The first is that at the point I am in the game I can completely destroy everyone I meet without suffering losses, as the AI seems to not want to fire unless all its guns are in range. I can stay right on the periphery and snipe them down (this is assisted by the fact that the AI won't close on me all the way). I'm hoping this behavior changes further down the road. Also, melee combat blows. It's rock-paper-scissors that has two outcomes. Outcome one is that the opponent always switches to whatever beats you, in which case you can destroy them (just start switching immediately after they do). The second outcome is the opponent randomly chooses, which means the whole thing is up to luck. Fortunately, it's only required in a few instances.
