Help me with my firewall

I have the firewall that came with my windows xp. I want a better one. What is a VERY good firewall i can download and use for free that dosen't slow down my computer? :(

I've been using zone alarm and it seems to do the job right. I've also been using Avast! Anti-virus. Both are free and definately better than norton, mcafee, or the stuff included with windows.

Someone clue me in on why we even need firewalls. I've had 1 virus in 5 years, (wsblaster), and I've never used a firewall. I always disable XP's.
