Whats the best 3rd Party N64 controller?

Post by fuctfuct »

I really don't like stock controller. Mostly the feel of the thumb stick (even when its working right). What i want to try is the Super Pad 64 Plus but i can't find one at a price im willing to pay.

I have heard the Madcatz controller is pretty good and has a "real" analog stick.

Opinions?

The Hori Mini Pad is suppose to be very good, but if you don't wanna drop a lot on a controller than I guess it's out.

I have the same complaint about the joystick, but I refuse to use anything that isn't an official controller. This is why I've been planning a modification that, in a nut shell, is getting a Gamecube stick on a Nintendo brand N64 controller.

Dude, that thing looks awesome. Eventually, I might actually spend 70 dollars for one of those to breathe new life into my N64 games.

Also, if you can find (or build) one, you might want to think about an GCN to N64 controller adapter ;)

I have no interest in using a Cube controller on anything but a Cube. I'm pretty anal about using only official controllers on systems. However, I have no problem replacing the stick on a N64 controller just because it sucks.

Although, some one did link me a guide to make a Cube-64 adapter. It's a fairly complicated build and requires an IC to work. If you're interested, I'll get the link for ya.

I have always liked those Hori N64 pads but they are way to much money. As far as using a cube or any other controller... I really hate using the c stick for the c buttons. I have tried it on Zelda (on the cube). Also, I remember playing through Zelda (emulator) with a PS2 controller years ago... and hating it. It's gotta have c buttons! hehe.

I imagine Saturn gamepads would work great for N64 emulation. the six primary buttons cover, A, B, and the C-buttons. The N64 had three shoulder buttons, but 98% of its games will only use two at a time. The only problem you'd ever run into would be FPS's, but those can be done on PSX gamepad clones.

Okay, so I sorta capsized the OP's topic. Very sorry about that. Just wanted to give an idea.

Now about the N64's joystick: I've seen a few eBay auctions here and there, selling the original controllers joysticks in bulk. Just the joystick, and its mechanics and wires needed to replace a broken one. Unless you can get your hands on a Hori pad, all of the other 3rd party controllers are shit. The joysticks are nice, but buttons break down, and the whole thing eventually goes all to hell.

For now, I'd just go with replacing joysticks with a fresh new one, and the Hori pads. Everything else is shit. I imagine that using the Cube's controller would only be nice for the FPS's.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

But he said that even when the joysticks work, he still doesn't like them.

The GCN joysticks are amazing and look very similar to the Hori Pad. That whole Pad looks like a GCN controller

hehe

They are kinda ok if they are working %100.. i just hate the texture of the top. Feels like you need to be wearing a rubber thimble on your thumb. I have replaced Thumb sticks with new ones before and its ass easy .. im just looking to try something else.

The Hori pad is actually using official Gamecube parts from what i've read. That analog stick is an actual stick from the gamecube controller. Another reason it feels amazing and is superb quality.
