Saturn 4MB Ram Cart

Post by christoph »

Are these only used for saving? You can't save already with a Saturn? Does a Japanese one work just the same on a US console? wtf?

If you are talking about the blue cart that was packed in with Capcom games, it is used for games that require more ram than the Saturn already has. Sprite based games with several frames of animation and very large characters like the Capcom versus series require these carts. They do not save or backup any games.

The Saturn does have on board memory to save games, though not much. The Saturn backup memory is battery powered and requires a CR2032 to work. The battery usually needs to be replaced every 3 years or so.

the RAM cart is for a select few games that need extra RAM for gameplay. The Saturn has built in saves, but also has save carts as well for additional storage. If you're buying used, you'll probably need to change the save battery, but it's a simple CR2032 in a battery seat behind a panel on the back of the system, so it's insanely simple to change.

Nope, the two are not interchangeable. If you pick up a Pro Action Replay 4 in 1 it should cover nearly all of the games that require a 4 meg or 1 meg cart.

It depends on the game, some games work fine with both, some games display corrupt graphics / dont work when using a 4mb cart over a 1mb cart.

An example is that KOF 96' will not work with the 4MB cart, but 97 will.

Ahh. I was under the impression they wouldn't work at all. I think that KOF 96' actually included a rom cart which already had data stored on it and this is why it requires a very specific cart.

KOF 95 requires a the ROM cart, KOF 96 required a 1MB cart, I know they were released together at one point so I imagine that version of 96 would need the joint cart perhaps? No idea how it was released.
