I'm a big fan of turn based J-RPGs, and given that my current situation only allows for me to play GBA and DS games, I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good ones for the system.
Of course I've played through the Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star games, so any suggestions other than those would be appreciated.
And since I know someone is going to ask why I like J-RPG's, it's because those were the games that shaped my childhood and I enjoy playing games that remind me of those carefree days. Heck, I even play through Phantasy Star 2 every couple of years since it was the game that most shaped my childhood. It's almost like my own personal journey to Mecca (granted finding my way to the actual Mecca might be easier than finding my way through some of the Nei Item mazes).

I don't own a DS, but I have been seriously considering buying one because I am a huge Shin Megami Tensei fan and the next one is coming out on Nintendo DS soon.

You just have to play Golden Sun. The graphics are spectacular, the gameplay is balanced and fair, while still giving you challenge and incentive to keep moving, the music is phenomenal, and the battle system, while still turn-based, gives you a great amount of options to make things interesting and spice up battles, while not overwhelming you with features. Also, it comes with a 2-player tournament mode that's always a nice diversion. The extras in the game are also interesting, and as is my understanding, there's an entire secret island you can visit if you play your cards right. All in all, Golden Sun is one of the GBA's best games, and certainly should not be missed.

For GBA, perhaps the unique Boktai. And on the DS, I have this game literally waiting to play, still wrapped up, but with high expectations- The World Ends with You.

GBA- Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, any of the Final Fantasies, Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Ages, Mother 3, Phantasy Star Collection, Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem- The Sacred Stones, Final Fantasy tactics Advance, Sigma Star Saga, Pokemon Emerald and FireRed/LeafGreen.
DS- The World Ends With You, Mario & Luigi- Bowser's Inside Story, Avalon Code, Contact, when it comes out Infinite Space and Shin Megami tensei- Strange Journey, and Etrian odyssey 1 and 2. You will fear the F.O.E.

Agreed with most of the choices above, believe it or not, both GBA and DS have a good library of J-RPG's, much more than GB and Game Gear could ever offer.
