PSX/PS2 60hz on PAL

Post by Lord_Santa »

hi everyone

I will present to you a problem, which has been bothering me for a couple of months

I have an old TV, which supposedly only supports 50hz (I live in Europe)

funny thing is, that I can play 60hz games from my Gamecube Xbox1/360 games, DreamCast games, etc.

all my consoles, except for my PSX/PS2 will play 60hz with no problem, whatsoever (in that I get a perfect picture, with colors and full-screen)

every time I try to play imported games on my PSX/PS2, my screen will become black/white, which should be normal

but since I can play all my other consoles at 60hz, I am a bit confused, as to whether it has something to do with the cables for my PSX/PS2 (I have tried 3 different cables for each); or if Sony has some kind of special requirements

I have used a program, in order to convert my imports from 60-to-50hz (on backup discs); but this program leaves me with black borders on the screen, which I am not very happy with

if anyone has any kind of information regarding this, I'd be a very happy camper

my TV is a Grundig Cinema 9030 Super Color back-projection TV and since it's 44" and my other TV (in the basement) Sony Trinitron is only 28", I really would like to have this working (the Trinitron will play any game(s) at 60hz, without problem and with color)

If youre using an RGB Scart cable to connect your psx then it should run in colour if your tv supports 60Hz, but you need to be using an RGB Scart cable.

I am using the RCAA (or whatever it's called - 1 red, 1 white and 1 yellow) and using a RF-converter, due to lack of SCART in this old TV

could this be the problem?

Somehow it sounds like your games are sending out a 50hz sigal to work on that PAL TV. If its any consolation, converting a PAL to NTSC game on the PS1 results in top and bottom edges too large to fit the NTSC screen.

Yeah that's the problem, if you want to use RF you can get a coaxial NTSC to PAL converter. I have one that I used to play imports with in colour. It was manufactured by MadCatz, I don't know where you would get one now though, could try eBay?

The black borders are because it's running at 50hz. If you ran it at 60hz then you'd get full screen. The reason you get black and white on NTSC is because PAL 60 and NTSC 60 aren't the same standards. You either need to get an RGB SCART cable or the aforementioned NTSC-PAL RF converter.

Hang on here, I use an RGB SCART cable on a PAL 60 TV and also get a black-and-white image when running imports. What exactly are the requirements again?

That's right, it's the NTSC signal that causes it to be black and white. If your TV isn't NTSC compatible then it will display in black and white, no matter what cable you use. However, if your TV is NTSC compatible and you use an RF or composite output it will only show black and white. If you use an RGB scart cable it will display in colour.

thanks for the help, looks like I'll have to invest in a new cable
(or just drag my 28" up from the basement)
