i tried to start playing this game recently after i've been hearing how classic it is for the past 4 years or so. i liked the idea of it being an action rpg similar to zelda, but i got stuck after getting the wind orb at the beginning of the game. i was reading a walkthrough and it said you need to level up to maybe level 3 or 4 before you can proceed past the windmill. does this sound right?
i temporarily gave up on this game already (and played clash at demonhead for a while instead!) but i'd like to give it a fair chance. so, does crystalis get better? or is there going to be a lot of this slow grinding of killing an enemy and only gaining a single experience point?

Im sorry that I cant help you Gritty Kitty - I got stuck in the same place recently and also gave up on the title (jumped to Startropics). So if anyone has a good answer I am interested as well.

Re: Crystalis for NES
To answer your question, after I got a little bit in I found I stopped grinding for experience, though I still occationally grinded for money. The only time I grinded for experience was in one of the dungeons near the end, where I found a monster that gave me a lot of experience for a small amount of effort, and I used that to max my level (I was 13, max is 16). One thing I will caution you is that the further you get in the game the more you will encounter monsters that are immune to certain swords. This will necessitate changing swords often in order to deal damage, frequently on the same screen of monsters; I found this mechanic to be a bit annoying.

For what it's worth, I loved Crystalis back when it came out and played it through to the end. That was a long time ago though and my memories are fuzzy.

Just have to add my two cents in here because I really love this game. Yes, the game sometimes imposes level restrictions where you can't defeat a boss unless you're a certain level, but don't let that put you off. The game itself is totally sweet, imaginative, and remains one of my favorite 8-bit games to throw in and play.
There's a real sense of adventure that the game evokes with its different locales and dungeons that pulls me in. Plus, even though the story is 8-bit, I thought it was pretty interesting as well, especially the ending (my mind was blown when I finished it, of course I was also 9). I would definitely give it another shot. You have to at least get to the mountain areas with the badass tunes and rock zombies.

back in 2006, racketboy was having a contest to come up with his username/website name (at the time, it was called "good gravy, great games"). i actually had a really good name, but racketboy was really offended by it. rather than ban me from the forums, he just decided to ban my status. i was 16-bit at the time, so i will forever be 16-bit. like being turned to stone, i guess8-bit Legend wrote:Gritty Kitty, how come it says you are "forever 16 bit"?
by this, do you mean it's just difficult to defeat a boss at a low level? or does the game actually not allow you to defeat the boss? if it's the latter, that's pretty rudeRokstaEnSweden wrote:the game sometimes imposes level restrictions where you can't defeat a boss unless you're a certain level
also, thanks for the sword info, MrPopo
i'll try to give crystalis another shot, but the idea of grinding is turning me off. the game has more depth than the original zelda, but at least zelda allowed you to take on some later dungeons (like level
