Looking for help designing "contemperary" retro gaming area

Post by Pringles »

Hi guys, this is my first post here, and I'd like to ask for some assistance. After seeing some nice pictures of gaming rooms on here, I was inspired to dedicate part of my room to my gaming hobby. I hope to create a minimalist-style gaming environment, suitable to setup 10-11 systems, and comfortable enough for 1-4 people to play.
I hope to get some suggestions on shelving and decoration options, or just game room tips in general. I'd like to decorate the walls with abstract, retro-style graphics. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the "I am 8-bit" art galleries, but that's the kind of style I'm looking for. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Check out the Ikea Ikea Besta/Framsta system:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categ ... oom/11794/

It has the minimalist look you're going for and it's modular, so you can design it to fit your needs. Of course, I'm biased, because that's what I used.

Hookup everything through switch boxes and power strips. Too many great collections out there with machines on display like a museum. The claim is they can easily hook them up to play but realistically most end up just being dust collectors. Proud to say I have all my machines hooked up to three video swtch boxes, all available at a flip of a switch.

Thanks to responders,I really like the IKEA furniture, and I do plan on getting some switches to set my consoles on. I'm looking for some cool art to hang/display. I've found some cool wall decals at http://www.whatisblik.com . Anyone furnish their space with some "Modern art meets Nintendo" stuff? If there are any online retailers who sell these types of things, or even if you have seen home-made pieces I'd like some info. Here is the Gallery I hope to design the room around. http://www.joystiq.com/photos/i-am-8-bit-exhibit/

Perhaps check etsy and attractmode. The latter won't have too much, but they're up and coming.

I have the Ice Invaders that are on that site! They're so cool, my gaming friends have a nerdgasm when I pour them a drink with these beauties floating in it.
